So despite his protestations to the contrary, it seems it is very much a case of

News has also reached us that Declan Ganley is tweeting that he will no longer be talking about the rogue's gallery of accusations levelled at him in the Prime Time Special.

Why not?

Well because Declan is taking out legal proceedings.

Curiously he said he was doing the same thing when he was running in the European elections.

One gets the sneaky suspicion that Ganley exploits libel laws to do the exact opposite to what they are intended.
The idea is that the law is there to protect one from falsehood.
It was no intended to be a legal Kevlar to protect one from the truth.

Sambath Reach: Fear and Laughter on Route 10

I was in Sicily on a vacation and happened upon a computer in bar where I discovered the tragic news of Sambath's stroke and death. Some young reporter, Julia Wallace, from the Cambodia Daily had left me a message on Facebook asking me if I had any recollections of my time with Sambath. Needless to say I had many. The message had been there for a day so the deadline may have passed. But I couldn't not respond to a request to jot down something about Sambath. Especially since he showered me with generosity when I returned to Phnom Penh. I think he thought the scholarship to the States, for which I had spent quite some time writing him a sterling reference, was partly responsible for putting him on the road to other scholarships and further success.
Sambath had applied for the same scholarship under my predecessor Sheri Prasso and got nowhere. But she had written him a pretty mundane reference. She said she didn't think Sambath was up to it. I said that I wasn't sure either but why not give him the chance and let him sink or swim. At least let him see the world.
Perhaps Sheri also had a clearer idea of what I was to find out; it was very hard to find a replacement who would be half as good as Sambath.

Anyhow Ms Wallace from The Cambodia Daily never got back to me and I forgot about what I had hurriedly written in a bar on a sad balmy evening in Sicily as fighter planes took off in the background to bomb Libya, I wrote this about a survivor who had lost his parents to the Khmer Rouge and then through luck acumen and hard work had made a bigger figure of himself on the world stage than I could ever hope to be. That is until his luck ran out.

I just recently spotted it on my computer and, since it is written, thought I might share it with Sambath's friends and family.

When I took over as Cambodia Correspondent at AFP, I encouraged Sambath to get more involved in reporting and saw that giving him his first byline had a dramatic effect. Equally dramatic and difficult for me was his three month absence when he managed to get a Freedom Forum Foundation scholarship to the States.

The only time I ever got annoyed with Sambath was when I asked him to tell a Gov tank commander that if the tank waited 20 mins I would give him 100 bucks for a lift to Pailin.

Sambath duly translated. All fine, so I ran back to our jeep that was stuck about a mile back in a jungle military traffic jam to grab water, food, hammock and mossy net. When I got back the tank was gone. And Sambath was looking sheepishly at me - a look I had never seen before. I said where's the tank. "It's gone."
"I know that! Why is it gone?"
"I didn't think it was a good idea," he replied.
Under pressure as we had been trying to get to Pailin for three days, which the Gov. had now 'taken' some four days previously, I started shouting at him:
"That's not your fucking call, man. I need to get there."
A few hours later the first reports that a tank had hit an anti-tank mine, with a few soldiers dead and the fate of some freelance photographers unknown, came in. The survivors then faced a ground attack at dawn and a mortar attack at lunchtime.
I had to go back to Sambath and half apologise.
"OK you were fucking right...but we make these decisions together in future."
The KR retook Pailin shortly afterwards and chased the Gov. forces back to within 30kms of Battambang, Cambodia's second largest city.
Within days the Gov. in PP said everything was fine, back to the status quo ante-bellum. But nothing ever in Cambodia happened that fast. We were being spun a yarn.
Sambath complained I was making his "head hot" with screams to call various generals in the northwest to try and find out what was really going on. The odd comment we got didn't conform to the line being spun in PP. So I told Sambath we were heading up. We got to BTG late the next day so we only got some 25kms down route 10, the road to the Khmer Rouge stronghold of Pailin. The Gov. said they had retaken Treng - the last governement outpost before the jungle leading to Pailin - but there were still some dead KR on the road and a smoking tank a few kilometers on the Battambang side of Sdau, a good 30 km before Treng.
We also noticed that the soldiers we had given a lift to, dropped into firing position when they got out of the pick-up.

It was getting late so we returned so we returned to the city to file that the government line was dubious to say the least. .
The next morning we retook route 10 in a beat up old taxi. AFP didn’t fork out for 4-Wheel Drives. Near the previous day's smoldering tank, we met a gang of top generals and Sambath engaged them. They too were parroting the PP line that the KR has been pushed back - although they were saying 20km to the capital's 40/50.
I said Sambath "I don't believe them, do you?"
He was skeptical. So I said we’d drive down the road a few clicks and see what’s happening.
But we both agreed that if the Gov. was saying 40 -50 and the generals on the road 20, we could probably safely believe 4-5 kms.
After 500 meters, there were no more Gov. soldiers to be seen. Just empty villages where returnees had recently set up in some of the swathes of land that had been cleared of the copious quantities of landmines.

The emptiness was eerie. No people, no ducks, no hens, nothing. The only sound came from two houses that were on fire.
"Kevin, I don't like this." Sambath said.
"Tell the driver just to go to the top of the hill – about a kilometer away - and we will look down into Sdau."
We continued for max a minute when I thought, "Sambath is right. This is all wrong. This is way too quiet."
Just as I was about to say 'let's turn' I heard the first bang and dived to the floor of the car. The second band clarified we weren't being shot at. We were being shelled. It whizzed over the roof and hit an adjoining house that burst into flames. I later wondered what would have happened had we been in the high SUV that I was so longing for.

The third shell landed in a mere couple of feet to the side of the passenger seat where Sambath sat. But as the road was on a mound, it blew away from us.
According to Sambath my head appeared back up over the seat amidst a maniacal mantra of “Fuck, fuck, fuck, we gotta get the fuck out of here...tell the driver to reverse.” Sambath pushed shoved and shouted at the driver who had frozen with shock until he came round. But reverse on the then Route 10 allowed a max of 10kph. And the KR gunner meanwhile was doing a good job tracking. I suddenly understood the phrase “walking the shells.”
But it was the sort of comprehension you don't need in life
I screamed to Sambath: “Forget mines, we have to turn around, tell the driver turn in the field."
So we reversed into the field. And like a bad B movie instantly got stuck. This was where a SUV would have been handy.

Automatically Sambath and I jumped out of the car then dived to the ground as a shell landed nearby. As the deris settled, the two of us, pumped with adrenalin, leapt up and pushed the car free. A macho feat that neither of us would have been cast for. Free! The driver then took off ...without us.

Sambath and I ran after the car, hearts banging as loud as the sound of the shells falling in our footsteps. An eternal 200 meters later, the driver slowed down. I managed to jump into the front and turned to see Sambath dive headlong through the open door onto the back seat. Within seconds we were out of range and in hysterics of nervous laughter.
I roared: "Sambath I could fucking live without this!"
And then we cracked up laughing at the inadvertent wisdom of my words.
As the adrenalin receded, I realized I had lost my camera. A minor issue we both decided. As was forgetting my flak jacket in the taxi trunk when we paid the driver three month's wages. He had finally slowed down after all. And no one deserves to die for someone else's ambition. I moaned about the flak jacket though. Sambath rightly asked what would need it for? And pointed out that when I did need it, it was in the boot.
It was our last trip together before I left for LA. And it was 10 years before I was back in Phnom Penh.
Sambath was settled and prospering. On our first night together, he told me that he had been back to Palin within months of our trip when Ieng Sary did his deal with Hun Sen and the Pailin and Phnom Malai Khmer Rouge went over to the government side.

Sambath told me he was in Pailin after the changing of the guard ceremony and went into a restaurant - always fond of his food. Anyhow he starts talking to some local Khmer Rouge guys - as was his capacity both to engage with and animate anyone. Turns out the two guys are tank crew. They ask Sambath what he does and he tells them he's a journalist.
The KR guys tell him that they almost got a camera a short while ago but didn't stop the tank in time and crushed it. Sambath says: "That's funny, my Irish boss lost his camera on Route 10 a few months back." Sambath recalls a moment of silence and then the KR tank gunners said: "You weren't the guys in the blue Toyota Corolla."
Sambath - "Eh yes were in a blue Toyota."
"Achoi Marai! (Motherfuck!) We fired 16 shells at you. We couldn't believe you got away. Especially when your car got stuck in the field. We were sure we had you."
True to form, Sambath burst out laughing and then proceeded to buy a bottle of whiskey and go on the rip with the two guys."
"We could have been killed by the same guys I was getting drunk a few months later...how stupid," he said as he clinked my glass and two of us bent over in hysterics.

Sambath...he could not only talk his way out of hell but he could get the devil to buy you drink and leave him thinking he was privileged to meet you.

It was marvelous to see him go on to do so well in life.
Cos he didn't have it easy. He was a gent and a hustler, a bon viveur and a hard worker.
It breaks my heart to think he will no longer be there to see me - and invariably lavish hospitality on me - when I revisit Cambodia.

Sean Gallagher And The Death Of The National Sport

It remains to be seen whether Sean Gallagher is an actual crook.

But, decent liberals that we are, let's be generous and take the bald bag man at his word.
We'll accept, for the moment, that he merely runs a sloppy ship instead of a crooked one.

And we'll not stop here to question the wisdom of paying such a man, not just for access, but for [B]advice[/B].

There is, however, one thing about which there is no ambiguity: Sean Gallagher is the poster boy for the once national sport of "Playing The System"

A big "bucker" for the Fianna Fail team, Sean and has helped the "family" maintain its clammy hands on this quasi criminal game's Sam Maguire

Thankfully this coarse sport of "Playing The System" is dramatically on the wane in the more evolved areas of country and rarely ever seen in those bastions of civilisation where inbred natives never got a foot, or boot boy, hold such as Dun Laoghaire.

The immoral, adolescent idolising of the shysters who play the system is still most prominent trait in those banjo playing counties where canoe trips are unadvisable as the local sisters who say "YES" to their brothers' proposals are numerous.

[B]Laois/Offaly Longford/Westmeath[/B] It seems that nearly a century after independence the inbred denizens of these cursed counties cannot see what is dawning on the rest of the country.

Whilst re-education camps have posited as a solution, this presupposes the existence of education in the first place.

These people still cling to the primitive notion that it is all about "getting one over" - be that a leg over the sister, a pint too many over the bar, a scam over the authorities.

One might despair but let's not indulge in further "negative campaigning."
The election of Michael D as President or more importantly, the defeat of this bog bagman, this inarticulate mouthpiece of ill-understood vacuous self-help mantras, does give grounds for [B]"positivity."[/B]

It shows a growing awareness of that which should be obvious to all decent and civilised spectators: that the game itself is founded on a 'foul.'

The system that one plays, the system that you have to get "one over on" is not some foreign entity.

It is ourselves.

To those who question the veracity of this, well, in the absence of a soul, just look in your pockets.

If they are not actually empty, they are probably lacking - to use your own lingo - in wedge.

And why is that?

Cos you have been trounced by the top team in the game.

Fianna Fail.

Fianna Fail - and their latest 'star' player Sean Gallagher - have 'played the system' so well that they scored the mother of all own goals.

The George Best of shysters, the Pele of pilferers, Fianna Fail 'broke' the system.

Leaving you and I and all the spectators of this outdated sport stoney broke.

Apart from the above embarrassing exceptions, this election has shown that the people don't want to play this game anymore.

It's like bungee jumping without a bungee.

And Ireland has just said [B]"that's it, no more."[/B]

The ref has told the shyster to get off the field.

The people want him and his ilk put out to pasture.

The theocratic nature of Israel has for too long been concealed behind the empty slogan “the Middle East’s only democracy.”
The idea of a Jewish state is tolerated and defended by the same 'progressives' who shiver at the mention of an Islamic one.
And while the US railed against the brute nature of the Taliban's Islamic state it rallies in defence of the anti-democratic idea of a Jewish one.

Worldwide indignation was aroused by the insult
to modernity that was the Taliban's use of the chador.
Yet somehow the world is supposed to find acceptable
Israel's use of that appalling medieval phenomenon: the siege.
Afghani woman were 'imprisoned' inside the chador. A whole Palestinian people is imprisoned inside Gaza.

Like all religious states, Israel’s true anti-cosmopolitan nature has
rarely been debated. Ironically, it's the secular, democratic desires
of the Arab Spring’s protests that have thrown an
unforgiving spotlight on both the Jewish State’s backwardness and its fears
of change to the region's retrogressive status quo.

‘New historian’ Israeli Benny Morris believes that an
ethnically-cleansed religious state was Israel’s aim from the very
outset. When global awareness started to render unacceptable the
policy of ‘transfer,' a more subtle, but equally evil, policy of
'politicide' was adopted. Politicide is an attack on any of the
constructs that define people as a nation. Its aim is to deprive
people of hope and to encourage emigration through despair.

The leak of the Palestine Papers – diplomatic correspondence about
Arab-Israeli peace talks 1999-2010 - further undermined Israel's
pretence at being the rational peace-seeker faced with a
delinquent, intransigent partner. Predictably, the bulk of the media
supported this pretence. Most coverage told us how a corrupt
Palestinian Authority was prepared to sell its people's aspirations
short while the leaders lusted for the perks of power. But what the
leaked papers really revealed was the flip side of this tale of treachery and greed. And that was the fact that the
Palestinians were prepared to bend over backwards for a peace deal.
Yet still they got nothing. And the world was spun the
fallacious rehash of the Palestinians "never missing an opportunity to
miss an opportunity".

Neither the democratic challenge of the Arab Spring nor the truths
revealed by the Palestine Papers has curbed Israel's backward
ambitions. Instead the world witnessed Benjamin Netanyahu getting 29
Congressional standing ovations whilst bluntly rejecting Obama's call
for a ‘‘67’ based peace deal - a plan which Israel's continuing policy
of creating facts on the ground has rendered nearly redundant.

Like a true zealot, Netanyahu treated us to a paean to old-fashioned
greed and territorial expansionism which if uttered by an Ayatollah
would have made many a young Iranian blush.
But Netanyahu, can't even hear the supposed 'sense' of the Israeli
left as they currently proclaim that a ‘67 based plan is the best deal
modernity will offer to that ultimately offensive and outdated
concept: the religious state.

A democratic deficit, to put it mildly, is
the hallmark of all of Israel's Arab neighbours. But, despite
oppression, it's the citizens of those countries who are out on the
streets bravely demanding that they be granted
the decency of a modern democracy.
The Arabs leaders may now quake at their people's demands.
But they are not alone in their fear of democracy.

"More and more Palestinians are uninterested in a negotiated,
two-state solution, because they want to change the essence of the
conflict from an Algerian paradigm to a South African one. From a
struggle against 'occupation,' in their parlance, to a struggle for
one-man-one-vote. That is, of course, a much cleaner struggle, a much
more popular struggle - and ultimately a much more powerful one. For
us, it would mean the end of the Jewish state."

That is the former vice prime minister in Ariel Sharon's government,
Ehud Olmert, talking to the Israeli paper Haaretz in 2003.
Olmert was recommending Israel impose a unilateral solution to
safeguard the Jewish state and protect its religious status from the
fatal threat of one-man one-vote. Olmert shows us that Israel, safeguarded by nuclear weaponry,
sees its real existential threat not in Arab Armalites but in the ballot box.

Olmert told Haaretz that his "formula for the parameters of a
unilateral solution are: To maximize the number of Jews; to minimize
the number of Palestinians; not to withdraw to the 1967 border and not
to divide Jerusalem" .

The newspaper noted that Olmert's language was that of “long ago”
adding that the former vice prime- minister hankered "unabashedly for
those more hopeful times." It seems those more “hopeful times” were
back when the ethnic cleansing implicit in 'minimising' Palestinians
was a more acceptable pursuit.

Olmert's language does indeed hark back to "long ago”.
Because in the 21st century, when it comes down to a choice of
religion over democracy, the answer must be quite simple.
And when religion involves the complete abnegation of democracy, the
question ceases even to be legitimate

Playing hard to get - peekaboo like some political Paris Hilton.
Perhaps the laziness of most journos is feeding his confidence.
And perhaps Declan sees a nice little 'I told you so!' niche.

See Lisbon didn't make you rich. And Mr Populist has got away with dancing on the public's anger about the cosy cartel of bankers politicians and devleopers.

A cosy cartel that is now symbolised by the tent at the Galway races.

Declan can articulate this anger well.
Cos after all he has some inside knowledge.
Sure wasn't he one of the attendees back in the day.

And the bankers. Oh yes.

They wouldn't perhaps include the golden circle at Anglo - those who, skating on thin legal ice and certainly taking a wide boy view of morality, borrowed from their bank in unusually tailored manners, to buy into and boost the share price of Anglo.

Why?
Cos the whole corrupt house of cards was about to come crumbling down and take the country with it.

And how did Libertas view this behaviour?
Behaviour that has subsequently seen words like treason being bandied about.

Well we only have Ganley's partner in ....Libertas's view at the moment, Ulick McEvaddy.

Ulick McEvaddy - a man, who like Declan ,makes his money primarily from US defence contracts - what did he do?
Rail against the injustice, rage against the burden that was surely going to be shouldered by the innocent little man, scream for regulation, demand the destruction of the corrupt incestuous nexus of bankers/developers/politicians.

No.

Ulick had a different take.

Unlike the crooks in Fianna Fail who at least pretended in public to be shocked and ashamed - Ulick spoke out with honesty, showing his true colours.

What, in his words, were the Anglo golden circle?

"Heroes".

I kid you fcuking not.

"Heroes".

"Heroes" in what?

In an economic war.

So the Libertas big whig saw the scenario as "war".

Against whom?

Us against Them.

"Treason" starts to sound inadequate to describe the panoramic scope of the treachery.

Anything to say about that Declan?

Le saboteur de démocratie

Bon, on le sait, on n’y revient pas, l’Irlande a voté non et les commentateurs de tout crin ont proposé leur version du refus, y compris ceux qui pensent que c’est un bien. Permettez-moi d’en rajouter une autre : le traité a été purement et simplement saboté par un seul homme, capable d’inonder le pays de tee-shirts, de casquettes, d’affichettes autocollantes et de 4x3 m portant tous un "NO" hyper-visible. Sans oublier les spots télévisés ou les messages radio. Pour ça, vous allez me dire qu’il faut de l’argent. Ça tombe bien, l’homme est milliardaire, s’appelle Declan Ganley, et c’est un vrai Irlandais d’origine. "His mother came from Achill Island, his father from Glenamaddy". Le "Monsieur No" du traité, c’est lui. Il vient de prouver par "a" plus "b" qu’on peut démocratiquement acheter une élection, et investir dans un résultat, à savoir ici le rejet du traité, pour son seul profit et dans son seul intérêt. Ne reste plus qu’à savoir pourquoi choisir cette réponse, et non investir dans le oui. A l’analyse, comme nous le verrons, la conclusion fait froid dans le dos, car elle fait partie d’un jeu d’échec mondial, où des Etats positionnent adroitement leurs pions pour garder leur hégémonie et leur primauté. Dans des domaines inattendus en ce qui concerne ce traité irlandais, car, nous allons le voir, cela touche aux problèmes de défense et de ventes d’armes. Inattendu, mais réel : ceux qui ont cru voir dans le rejet du traité une quelconque révolte des gueux contre les féodaux de Bruxelles en seront aujourd’hui pour leur frais, désolé pour mes confrères malvoyants. Sabotage il y a effectivement eu, et un homme y a mis toute son énergie, et surtout tout son argent. Or, cet argent, justement, a une odeur. Et elle n’est pas très bonne, étant donné sa provenance.

L’homme, n’a pas encore la quarantaine et, extérieurement, il a tout du richissime entrepreneur : il vit dans un château à Moyne Park, près de Tuam, à côté de Galway, possède Mercedes et Rolls-Royce Phantom (rachetées au groupe The Who !) et l’inévitable hélicoptère qui sied à tout "tycoon" actuel. Une vraie caricature de riche. Sa bâtisse n’est pas rien : elle appartenait auparavant au chanteur (écossais) Donovan. Sa fortune, il l’a établie il y a une quinzaine d’années déjà grâce à... l’Europe et l’ouverture de ses marchés à d’autres puissances : acheter de l’aluminium à la Russie, via la Lettonie, du bois à la Russie (via la "Kipelova Forestry Enterprises") ou à cette même Lettonie ou (et se faire au passage nommer conseiller économique du pays !), installer les Telecoms en Bulgarie et une télévision par câble (déjà revendue 18 millions d’euros), et même vendre des bijoux sur internet (un échec, là, plutôt, pour sa société Adornis, qui l’a planté de 7 millions). Pour l’aluminium acheté dans les années 90, ses profits ont été mirobolants : "Ganley was buying for $30 a tonne and selling for $300 a tonne, and because he never had to pay upfront there was no capital requirement. It was how some of the current Russian oligarchs made their money". Dans un pays en pleine décrépitude, les ex-Soviétiques ne sont pas regardants sur les conditions du commerce ! Et Ganley travaille alors en cash, sans avoir à attendre les traites à 60 jours. A l’origine de sa rapide fortune, il y a ce procédé, qui est celui d’un margoulin davantage que d’un commerçant, mais ce n’est pas le seul. Il est alors très jeune (la vingtaine !) touche à l’époque un peu à tout, comme d’autres personnes évoquées ici dans ces colonnes... et va même très loin, comme cette histoire de lancement de satellite par des Russes, dans lequel il s’était immiscé, bloquée in extrémis par le gouvernement américain... Pour un homme de 39 ans seulement, cela semble assez irréel, une telle fortune faite aussi rapidement. De l’argent facile, il n’y a pas quarante façons de se le procurer aujourd’hui. Vous pensez à la même chose que moi ? Attendez, attendez, ça vient !

Dans sa société principale actuelle, Rivada (radio interoperable voice and data application) Networks, (après Broadnet, Cabletel revendues toutes deux) on trouve en effet du beau linge, qui n’est pas obligatoirement en provenance du monde civil : l’amiral James Loy, également secrétaire du Homeland Security, ancien dirigeant des gardes-côtes US et à la tête de Lockheed Martin, Robert F. Duncan, également des gardes-côtes, et le général Dennis McCarthy, l’ancienne tête pensante des Marines. Sans oublier Timothy J. Keating, à la tête du Pacific Command. Ou John Kelly, de la firme Textron, très liée à la défense US ou l’assistant du secrétaire du commerce US, John Kneue. L’homme dirige également Hibernia Aerospace, dont on ne possède aucune information à ce jour. Parmi ces juteux contrats, à noter celui de 70 millions de dollars obtenu en 2004 pour la fourniture de téléphones d’urgence en Irak... une affaire révélée par le Los Angeles Times et vite étouffée... par la presse américaine. En réalité, le réseau de téléphonie mobile irakien lui avait échappé, malgré une offre à deux reprises en 2003 et 2004 en compagnie du groupe Qualcomm. Ils proposaient tous deux le système US, en CDMA, alors que l’Irak choisissait le système européen, sous GSM. Les téléphones pour urgences avaient été une compensation pure et simple de la part de l’Irak et du Pentagone. Pour décrocher le contrat de téléphonie cellulaire, Ganley était allé jusqu’à recruter une société écran esquimaude, NANA Pacific, devenue "Guardian Net", ayant appris qu’un article de loi de discrimination positive les favorisait dans l’obtention de contrats américains ! Le nom de sa société de téléphonie laisse rêveur : "Liberty Mobile". Pour ce qui est de la liberté d’entreprendre et de se déguiser en eskimo pour vendre des téléphones dans le désert, peut-être... Une enquête sur l’attribution illicite des téléphones d’urgence menée par les autorités irakiennes avait été balayée de la main par un dénommé Paul D. Wolfowitz, chez qui Declan Ganley a ses entrées semble-t-il, ainsi que son homme de main, Don DeMarino, un businessman américain, plutôt vieil habitué de l’affairisme. Il travaillait déjà pour George Bush senior. Un député américain chargé d’évaluer les possibles malversations avait conclu par une sentence terrible à propos des méthodes utilisées par Ganley et son équipe : "Below the deadly serious efforts to restore security and legitimacy to Iraq lies a muted gold rush mentality." Notre homme est resté au stade de la ruée vers l’or, à part que l’or, pour lui, n’est plus à creuser en Californie mais... à Bagdad.

Parmi les aventures douteuses de notre nouveau riche, celle de l’Albanie n’est pas en reste. A la fin des années 90, l’Albanie, qui souhaite progresser, crée l’Anglo Adriatic Investment Fund, un fonds d’investissement qui ramasse l’argent accordé par l’Etat aux personnes dont les biens avaient été saisis par les communistes. 450 000 personnes vont y adhérer, la gestion étant accordée à... Ganley. Au début, tout se passe bien, mais la spirale inflationniste et les élections nouvelles mettent une fin à l’expérience. Au passage, l’argent avait été multiplié par trois, et Ganley en avait touché une large part.

Notre touche-à-tout a tenté de remporter également en Irlande le marché de la téléphonie mobile, mais a échoué. Toutes ces affaires et ces transactions à partir de l’Irlande et non des Etats-Unis ou d’un autre pays d’Europe, car en Irlande, le taux d’imposition des entreprises est un des plus bas du monde avec 12,5 % seulement. Pour le décollage de ses sulfureuses affaires, notre homme a donc bénéficié des largesses de l’Union européenne : ailleurs, il n’aurait pas réalisé semblables bénéfices et subit une imposition plus lourde. Sans oublier chez lui un lobby très particulier : l’homme a bâti aussi une partie de sa fortune avec des contrats militaires américains et non irlandais. Et pas des moindres, comme ceux décrochés pour assurer les communications lors des secours pour les dégâts de l’ouragan Katrina. Il n’y a pas de petits profits, et on est loin de l’humanitaire. De simples camionnettes équipées de talkie-walkie et d’un GPS, et voilà un réseau de crise inventé de toutes pièces : la rapidité avec laquelle il va décrocher auprès de l’armée US un contrat mirobolant pour des engins pas innovants pour deux sous laisse pantois. Et laisse surtout planer l’ombre d’un pendant à une transaction bien trop en sa faveur...

Notre Irlandais se retrouve donc étroitement lié au Pentagone dans d’obscures conditions. Et comme par hasard, cela se reflète directement dans certaines de ses fameuses affiches de la campagne irlandaise : l’une d’entre elles arborait un "We don’t want EU military expansion", qui en dit long, et qui fait de notre homme le parfait sous-marin d’un lobby de l’armement américain qui ne souhaite pas le renforcement de la puissance militaire européenne... en dehors, bien entendu de l’Otan, pour qui certains ont depuis peu les yeux de Chimène. Des slogans militaristes à un point exceptionnel dans cette campagne qui n’a aucun rapport au départ : une autre de ses affiches clame un "People died for your freedom, vote No" qui fait appel à un vieux passé enfoui dans la mémoire des Irlandais, ses fiers combattants des deux guerres (la célèbre 16e division dans la Somme), qui, selon les sbires de Declan Ganley, se seraient battus pour rien, puisque le traité aurait été une "perte de libertés" individuelle. Gonflé, comme rhétorique, d’autant plus que la fortune du monsieur, qui lui permet aujourd’hui de torpiller allègrement le vote, a été bâtie du temps où l’Irlande a bénéficié d’un montant d’aides incroyables de la CEE pour relever son économie : "le ’tigre celtique’ doit en très grande partie à son entrée dans la Communauté (1973) d’être passé, en deux décennies, de la misère à l’opulence, ancien pays le plus pauvre d’Europe devenu le deuxième plus riche de l’Union européenne en produit intérieur brut (PIB) par habitant, après le Luxembourg". Au point que l’économie du pays repose aujourd’hui sur un matelas incroyable de capitaux étrangers, attirés par les facilités d’installation des entreprises : "La somme des actifs immobilisés (usines, bureaux, sièges sociaux...) et des capitaux issus de l’investissement étranger en Irlande représente 26 fois son produit intérieur brut annuel", relève l’Organisation de coopération et de développement économiques (OCDE). Declan Ganley a fait de cette période le premier étage de la fusée de sa fortune personnelle : bénéficiant de toutes les aides possibles, chouchouté par un gouvernement qui bénéficie de la manne européenne, il prospère, et vite. Il n’est pas le seul, tout le monde lorgne alors sur l’Irlande. Familier d’Apple, j’ai retourné pendant des années des ordinateurs estampillés Made in Ireland, fabriqué à Cork. La firme américaine était venue s’installer en Irlande avant d’être attirée par les sirènes chinoises... le capitalisme ayant ses lois, et elle font peu de cas des ouvriers... mais ça on le sait : un jour l’Irlande, le lendemain le Maroc, le surlendemain la Chine. Mondialisation, ils disent.

La fortune de notre self made man est un peu étrange, car selon lui-même... elle n’est "pas nécessairement établie" : On ne peut pas dire combien on vaut tant qu’on n’a pas vendu son entreprise. Et pour une raison simple : mes entreprises ont toutes été créées à partir de rien. Elles ne sont pas cotées en Bourse et leurs informations financières sont donc difficilement accessibles au public.” Ah, tiens, intéressant : quand on agit comme ça, et que l’on connaît surtout ses clients préférés, on est en droit de penser que cette fortune n’a pas été totalement "établie" selon les règles de l’art boursier... et l’on n’a pas tort : notre homme a beau être fervent catholique, il semble avoir oublié d’aller au confessionnal ces dernières années. Lui préfère noyer le poisson, en claironnant pourquoi il ne veut pas de ce fameux traité : "EU must listen to its citizens - Libertas - Politics, National News - Independent.ie "This was an anti-democratic document, it proposed to create an unelected President of Europe, an unelected Foreign Minister, to remove our Commissioner for five years out of every fifteen, to dilute our voting weight." C’est selon lui pourquoi il crée son mouvement "Libertas", qui n’a pour objectif que de s’attaquer au Traité de Lisbonne. Notre homme vient d’activer le second étage de sa réussite : une fois presque en orbite, il lui faut à tout prix empêcher les commissaires européens, réputés tatillons, de venir fouiner d’un peu trop près dans ses affaires. Notre homme aurait-il donc des choses à cacher ? La réponse ne va pas tarder... mais avant, il faut noter que comme la loi l’exige, Libertas ne pouvait vivre que des dons de ses inscrits... or, le nombre de produits dérivés de la campagne du "No" est tel qu’on ne peut pas imaginer autre chose qu’une participation massive de notre richissime corrupteur. Combien aura-t-il investi dans la bataille ? On ne le saura jamais... quand on lui a posé la question de ces actifs en Lettonie, il a répondu "Good… In some countries you need to run silent and deep." Il ne semble pas qu’il n’y ait que la Lettonie pour avoir droit au silence radio sur les investissements du sieur Declan. Il a chiffré ses dépenses à 1,3 million d’euros, pour 700 000 pour le Fianna Fail, mais tout le monde s’accorde à dire que c’est bien davantage.

Logiquement, fier de son succès, Ganley aurait donc dû proposer de transformer ses supporters en un parti véritable : croyez-vous, notre homme préfère en rester à son "think thank" : c’est beaucoup plus pratique d’agir en restant dans l’ombre, d’arroser en tee-shirts et de repartir discrètement une fois son forfait accompli. "I’m not a politician but if our voice was not heard and was ignored, then would I as an active citizen do whatever I could to ensure that our voice was heard, in my own small way. I would most certainly want to do something about that." L’homme se dit ne pas être un politicien, mais influe sans vergogne sur le résultat d’un vote : étrange positionnement. On a là le prototype même du fomenteur de complots façon CIA : jamais vu, jamais pris. En revanche, avec lui, on a l’assurance d’avoir de l’argent pour arriver à ses fins. Et d’acheter à coups de tee-shirts et de casquettes les 109 964 votes qui ont fait la différence. Les 3 % au-dessus des 50 % de ce vote spolié par un intrigant sous-marin politique. Qui tient énormément semble-t-il à ne pas se montrer tant que ça. Ou ne donne pas de CV très clairs sur son étonnante réussite industrielle... et ce n’est pas pour rien. Viktor Bout aussi n’a jamais écrit de CV, au fait... car oui, notre homme n’est pas la tendre colombe annoncée, loin de là, et ses "activités" ne sont pas toutes blanches. Et elles incluent, oui, le commerce des armes. Mais de cela nul n’a parlé durant la campagne. Car notre homme est rusé, et s’est bien arrangé depuis plus de quinze ans pour se cacher derrière des sociétés écrans, à la façade bien respectueuse. Il n’y a pas que derrière les eskimos qu’il se cache.

Lors de la venue le 25 juin 2004 de W. Bush en Irlande, des soldats circulaient en véhicules SISU de Patria de Hameenlinna. Amusant de constater que l’armée irlandaise achète aujourd’hui du matériel... finlandais. La firme n’a pas spécialement bonne réputation, elle est suspectée un peu partout de vendre... en graissant largement la patte de ses intermédiaires. En Slovénie, tiens, tiens, la firme est accusée depuis le 30 mars 2007 d’avoir triché sur la vente des véhicules à 6 roues. En 1999, la firme avait vendu pour 20 millions de canons Howitzer à l’Egypte. Et en Slovénie, comme en Lettonie, on trouvait il y a quelque temps encore notre homme, en qualité d’hommes d’affaires... fort discret. Lui ou ses collègues, en particulier deux frères.

Parmi les multiples sociétés de Ganley, on trouve en effet Omega Air, installé à Shannon même et gérée par les frères Ulick and Desmond McEvaddy : deux Irlandais bon teint. Et avant tout fort discrets, peut-être plus encore que leur patron : "Aviation tycoons Ulick and Desmond McEvaddy have accumulated great wealth over the past 15 years without attracting much publicity"... Omega Air comme son nom l’indique, est une firme d’aviation qui a une curieuse spécialité : les vieux Boeing 707... vendus en pièces détachées au Pentagone au prix de l’or, pour entretenir la flotte vieillissante de vieux tankers ou d’avions radars de l’US AIR FORCE. De l’or en barre, l’Air Force ayant une gestion devenue apocalyptique de ses stocks. "Nobody, not even Boeing who designed and built them, know as much about 707s as the McEvaddys", avoue un de leurs associés. Au fil des ans, ils se sont rendus indispensables auprès de l’armée américaine, à un point que vous n’imaginez pas. "They developed close ties to the US military, stripping and modifying the aircraft to become refuelling tankers which are essential to modern forces.’’ Au point de devenir des ravitailleurs privés pour une armée américaine décidément prête à tout ! Deux Boeings 707 et un McDonnell DC-10 privés qui servent à ravitailler la Navy, ça paraît incroyable, mais ça existe et c’est aujourd’hui visible tous les jours dans le ciel américain. Les "Omega tankers" fournissent le kérosène aux Hornets de la Navy !! Sidérant ! Et ce n’est pas fini : selon un rapport d’Amnesty, "the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has also reported Omega Air’s involvement in test flights to develop automated refuelling for unmanned aerial vehicles"... On le voit, les frères McEvaddy sont noyés jusqu’au coup dans le business militaire, et le complexe industriel qui pèse sur l’économie américaine et le monde entier. Et leur patron, c’est Declan Ganley, qui joue les défenseurs de l’âme irlandaise, par intérêt : le troisième étage de sa réussite, c’est la conquête du marché de l’armée irlandaise, la quatrième étant... le juteux marché de l’Otan ! Les Awacs ont en effet besoin d’être remotorisés, et les frères irlandais ont déjà la solution. Le Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219, réacteur neuf exigeant peu de modifications, testé par eux en 2001 sur un de leurs vieux 707, et même essayé en vol par Desmond McEvaddy lui-même. En face, c’est EADS, pas moins, comme concurrent ! Les colombes de la paix irlandaises se révèlent être en réalité de vrais faucons.

Facile, en effet, dans ce cas, avec l’essence qui coule dans les perches de ravitaillement, de se payer des bus arborant sur toute leur longueur des slogans contre le Traité de Lisbonne ! On peut toujours se dire, oui mais ça c’est la société civile, et Omega travaille dans une activité... militaire. Ce à quoi répond sans hésiter Ulick McEvaddy : “The old bogey is always how do we know we can rely on you in war ?... Nations don’t go to war without the public anyway... Vietnam, Korea - there were as many civilians in theater as there were soldiers”. Super, plus de différences entre civils et militaires, vive les mercenaires partout !!! Ulick McEvaddy, employé de l’homme qui veut abattre l’Europe, est le clone d’Erik Prince, le fondateur de Blackwater de sinistre mémoire en Irak. Les mêmes qui se sont chargés de nettoyer à leur façon la Nouvelle-Orleans, main dans la main avec les employés de... Declan Ganley. Aegis Defence Services Ltd est la firme de mercenaires concernée : bénéficiaire d’un contrat de 293 millions de dollars en 2004, elle est dirigée par Tim Spicer, vétéran des Falklands, mouillé dans une vente d’armes illicite au Sierra Leone et surtout ayant sévi sous l’uniforme anglais en Irlande, où ses hommes avaient tué un civil catholique.

"Les nations ne vont pas en guerre sans le soutien du public", affirme notre homme, poseur de slogans "pacifistes" dans son propre pays... On voit à quoi il prépare l’Irlande en fait : aux mêmes idées que l’Amérique et sa notion de guerre privatisée. Des mercenaires irlandais sont aussi en Irak, et ce n’est pas un hasard. D’un côté l’Eurofor, qui ne rapportera jamais rien à Ganley, de l’autre... ses mercenaires privés. De là à utiliser les aéroports civils pour les transports militaires, il n’y a qu’un pas : "The Department of Transport has released information to Amnesty International about 356 civilian flights requesting permission to carry weapons or munitions through Irish airspace between January 2003 and October 2006, 56 of which landed in Ireland. Equipment being transported ranged from missile and bomb parts, to small arms, to military aircraft an helicopter components." Et pour ça, à Shannon, on dispose déjà de certaines "facilités" :"Shannon was presumably chosen as a stopover because an Irish-registered subsidiary located at Shannon, Volga-Dnepr Ireland Ltd, provides maintenance services for Volga Dnepr’s Antonov aircraft, as well as supplying maintenance and spare parts to Antonov cargo aircraft around the world, according to the company". Sachant que les Antonov 128 sont les plus grands avions de transport après le Galaxy, il y a de quoi d’inquiéter. Pour McEvaddy, il est vrai, le contrat pour acheter un avion ou le louer est plus simple que d’avoir à lire le traité européen jugé par lui tellement "opaque"... au pays des aveugles, les borgnes sont rois.

Evidemment, dans un tel contexte, la "spécialité" des deux frères a vite débordée : "They also became the world’s leading authority on replacing the old, noisy engines on 707s with a Pratt & Whitney system which saves fuel and brings them into line with modern international standards. Owning 40% of Air Gambia, they also began regular scheduled services between London and Banjul and became involved in developing the tiny west African country’s tourism business". Air Gambia, tiens tiens... Le nœud gordien du trafic d’armes en Afrique. Ou l’on trouve aussi des politiciens américains "remarquables", tel : "Richard T. Hines, the head of the powerful Republican lobbying firm RTH Consulting, Inc. Hines, a South Carolina native and a protege of the late GOP dirty trickmeister Lee Atwater, was one of the architects of the dirty tricks campaign by Bush against John McCain in the 2000 South Carolina primary". Et où on retrouve notre vieil ami... Viktor... bien connu des fidèles lecteurs : "the Gambia is the headquarters for one of many of Bout’s front companies — companies that are used to smuggle everything from weapons to diamonds and mercenaries to international relief supplies". Et revoilà notre dealer d’armes préféré !!! Utilisant à qui mieux mieux les vieux Boeing 707 d’Air Gambie pour ses transports de Kalachnikovs !! Pour mémoire, rappelons qu’Ulick McEvaddy, ancien officier de l’intelligence irlandaise, parle couramment le russe, ce qui a dû lui faciliter la tâche en maintes occasions, y compris pour discuter avec Bout, originaire du Tadjikistan (et lui ancien interprète dans l’aviation russe).

Les frères McEvaddy sont évidemment de fervents supporters de l’intégration complète de l’Irlande dans l’Otan, aujourd’hui simple "partenaire"... sur les autocollants il est marqué "liberté", mais dans leur esprit l’Otan est la zone de passage obligé du pays !! Fournir en priorité l’armée irlandaise, présenter leurs activités, voilà leur notion de la "neutralité". Le gag, c’est que leur patron, en 2005, était invité à Madrid, du 8 au 11 mars au "sommet international sur la démocratie, le terrorisme et la sécurité", trois domaines qui semblent bien être de prédilection pour lui, en définitive : que vient faire un patron d’entreprise de 39 ans dans une pareille réunion, nul ne le sait. A part se remplir l’agenda, pour de futures et discrètes livraisons...

Il y a des fortunes qui se font facilement, semble-t-il, en Irlande comme ailleurs. Et fort discrètement surtout. Surtout celles non cotées en Bourse... et incontrôlables juridiquement et financièrement. Un traité européen saboté par un dealer d’armes déguisé en Irlandais aux bonnes manières qui ne boit pas une goutte d’alcool : on aura décidément tout vu... quant à ceux qui ont applaudi au non irlandais en méconnaissance de cause, ils peuvent toujours se raviser. La démonstration vient d’être faite que l’on peut tromper une population à coups de dollars et d’autocollants. Ceux qui en doutent encore n’ont plus qu’à suivre les affaires de Declan Ganley, le vendeur d’armes déguisé qui achète les démocraties pour continuer à faire fortune tranquillement. Sur le dos des démocrates bernés.

Local children discovered the ghostly image.

Thousands of people have been flocking to the small Kilkenny village of Knocktopher to pay respect to what some believe is a divinely inspired image of Eurosceptic arms dealer Declan Ganley.

The image was uncovered by local children whilst drunkenly cutting down trees with stolen penknives. At first, the striking resemblance to Mr. Ganley went unnoticed, as the children in question were unaware of Mr Ganley’s face and his all consuming personality.

However, late Sunday, several members of Mr Ganley’s inner circle were coincidently strolling past the innocuous tree stump when ‘a blinding gush of hot wind‘ penetrated the night air – leaving in its wake the dulcet features of the entrepreneurial war profiteer.

Ganley's face is seen to smile when touched by females.

Since then, wild eyed anti-Lisbon Treaty canvassers have been conducting nightly vigils in the surrounding constituency – with candlelit parades, badger baiting and traditional clown dancing accompanying the proceedings.

“Knocktopher is a blessed place,” said local tourist board official, Libertas member and parish Priest, Father Paddy Browne. “The Catholic Church and Libertas in no way promotes the belief in scaremongering and superstition, but I firmly believe that this is a genuine miracle, probably sanctioned by God himself.”

At play in the fields of our Lord?

Asked why God should want Mr Ganley’s face to appear on a tree stump in the lead up to a tightly contested referendum, Father Browne ventured that “scripture speaks of God’s violent opposition to European integration, indeed, we all probably remember the famous passage in Exodus when he asks Moses to lead the chosen people into the desert so that they may say NO unto Lisbon.”

Mr Ganley retired from public life in June following his failure to get elected to the European Parliament. His movements since have been cloaked in secrecy, with some commentators suggesting that Mr Ganley had never actually existed and that his sudden appearance in public life was merely the mass hallucination of ‘evil made manifest in human form’.

However, Mr Ganley has recently stunned critics by his transubstantiation back to the political stage with a strength, swagger and intellectual certitude usually reserved for firebrand, right wing zealots.

Mr Ganley refuses to directly address the mysterious proceedings in Knocktopher and has instead released the following, oddly phrased communique:

“God has spoken. The time of purification is at hand – and I’ve got the guns.”

Men of destiny who both enjoyed staring out of windows. Absolutely no other similarities are suggested whatsoever.

At this stage of the game you probably think that you have seen every form of political low-life, every grubby act, move and utterance possible, and some you would deem impossible, others that literally baffle belief.
So that's why we welcome Declan Ganley with loaded - ooops sorry - open arms.
Cos when it comes to dodgy characters with shady pasts, Declan is in a league of his own.
Plummy sounding Ganley, who the more he tries to be down with the people, the more he seems like a Plastic Paddy, has a table of his own at the supposedly defunct A-list rogues' gallery.
A gallery whose clinetele included such greats as the late Liam Lawlor, who had personal dealings with Declan. Fianna Fail and the whole Galway tent crew.
Then there's the questions. So many questions. So many writs. So few answers.
When Prime Time did a feature. Ganley had to issue a clarification afterwards saying he did actually know a business partner, who was involved in arms dealing and died in controversial circumstances.
Following a host of theats and legal feigns, Ganley was goaded into court when he claimed Kevin Barrington's article portrayed him as a liar, corrupt and a mass-murderer.
Ganley would score poorly in textual analysis re the mass-murderer allegation. But that's irrelevant.
What is relevant is the outcome. Despite his belief that he was depicted as corrupt, lying mass-murderer - and let's face it, it doesn't get much worse than that in the reputation stakes - what does the bold Declan do?
Having failed with his threat to join the publisher and author to the suit, Ganley settles.
Settles for what?
Some sort of retraction you would presume.
But, no. The settlement is basically for the right to reply which he could have got with a phone call.
And then what does Ganley do?
He reneges on the terms of his own settlement.

His reputation in total tatters, his candidature rejected by the Irish electorate, his party finances subject to more questions than answers, his pan European members - a motley crew embracing everything from scandalous Neo Nazi far right to the sinister elites constituting a Wahhabi wing of the Catholic Church - being the subject of an statement of concern from the Simon Wesisenthal Centre. A YEAR AGO today, I promised that I would return in a year and evaluate the claims made by the yes side in the second Lisbon referendum, and the state of the country generally. Thanks to TheJournal.ie, here are my thoughts, if anybody cares to read them.
In the past few weeks I saw off a friend in rural Galway who has departed to Australia, with his wife and young children. He was a good and decent man, a hard worker, a saver with a loving home. He never drove a sports car or had apartments in Spain, but he just couldn’t keep it going here anymore.
Watching this is breaking my heart. Like many people, I’m sitting near numb as my country is driven into the ground, her children into exile and her future sold to those that should have been forced to eat their investment failures.

...for the very group of people who have wreaked the most harm on our economy. Ordinary people are finding their businesses and their jobs failing every day, and they are being forced to start over and begin again. But our banks? Our political ‘establishment’? Are they taking this pain?
No. While very many young families with large mortgages are reduced to having to borrow a few Euro from their aging and worried parents just to make ends meet, the government has its hand in our pockets, taking from us and giving to people most of us have never met, and who don’t care about our country, or community.
By 2014, according to Dr. Contstantin Gurdgiev of TCD, every single citizen’s share – from infants to grandmothers – of our overall national debt will be €51,830. That figure does not include the billions taken from the national pension reserve fund to further prop up the banks. Our Government is willingly going down this path, and this is the price you will have to pay. It is madness.
Does anybody think that the old arguments that the “costs of borrowing will explode if we do nothing” hold any credibility when the costs of borrowing – if it is even available any longer – have exploded anyway? The only difference is that the amount borrowed is much more – and the cost is higher than that of Iceland, which did nothing. And yet Lisbon was supposed to save us from Iceland’s fate.
This philosophy of government has failed utterly. We now have the spectre of the EU Commissioner telling us that we must become a high tax economy – instead of being free to focus on growth and renewal. A whole generation instead condemned to stagflation and depression.
Businesses cannot grow when they are facing higher taxes to pay debts for banks who will not lend back to them in turn. A healthy property market cannot grow when the Government insists on drip-feeding repossessed properties onto the market over the course of a decade. That is a recipe for a depressed market, artificial interference, and stagnation.
Our political leaders have lost their senses. The current crop of politicians are treating us, and our children like a limitless credit card. They simply do not believe that it is your money, to them, it is all theirs, and it is merely a matter of deciding how much you get to keep. They are committed to the idea that they can fix everything that they have broken, and that they can force the markets to do their bidding. Nature, and the world, is laughing at them.
We now have a choice. We can stay on the track now supported almost completely by the entire political establishment, or we can embrace an alternative.
A growing economy will raise revenues, and decrease welfare expenditures. The best way to lower the structural deficit is not by squeezing more out of a shrinking pie, but by baking a bigger pie. We need a government that focuses all of its energies not on creating jobs, but on helping those who do. Instead of raising corporate taxation, we should be cutting it further. Instead of learning the false lesson that we did not have enough regulations, we should realise that the truth was that we had bad regulatorsy

There is nobody who seriously argues that the Government did not have the tools to control the banking system – we all know that it simply did not have the competence. We need confidence and faith – not in politicians, but in ourselves. Enda Kenny will not restore this nation to greatness, and we all – even those young Fine Gael supporters and TDs who do their duty to their party ably – know it in our hearts.
The Labour party, cynically, used a builders helmet in their Lisbon jobs posters. Eamon Gilmore is now a spokesman for the people’s anger. But we cannot shout ourselves out of this crisis, nor can we tax our way to jobs, or regulate our way to recovery. In one of his wiser moments, it was Churchill who correctly said “the man who thinks he can tax his way out of a recession is a man who thinks he can stand in a bucket and lift it by its handle”.
To complete our tour of the country’s prospective leaders with Brian Cowen – well. Brian Cowen is a tragic figure at this stage, along with much of the dead wood that sits around his cabinet table advising him to carry on.
There is no party with a vision for economic growth in this country. Sure, there are those with a hodge-podge of ideas – most of which involve more government spending and more government interference – but there is no party with a vision. No clear set of ideas that lay out where we want to be in 20 years and how, by working as a community, we can get there.
We made a mistake a year ago, when we allowed ourselves to be scared by predictions of doom. Predictions of doom are the stock in trade of the Irish establishment. They do not like your instincts, so they scare you into submission. Well, this time, it wasn’t the bogeyman de jour that got us here – it was them.
They will tell you that letting bondholders get burned would “ruin ireland”, just as they told you Lisbon would bring jobs and get us off this road. They will shout phrases like “systemic importance” at you when in your heart you know that the only thing which is systemically important is our confidence in our own ability to get ourselves out of this mess.
And so, instead of voting for real reform – reform that could have addressed Europe’s long-term cultural, economic, strategic, and demographic challenges, we voted for a fudge. We were told it would make the EU more democratic – but we are still being lectured by unelected commissioners. We were told it would speed up decision making, but we still have the spectacle of a Europe unsure of how to move forward, and being taken less seriously by existing and growing powers. We were told it would protect our interests, but we are more exposed than ever. This is what happens when we let others shape our future, instead of seizing it ourselves.
So, for my small part, I would appeal to our people to stick around, and to talk to their children.
Tell them we have a hard but exciting road ahead.
That we have to make changes. That we will help our family and our neighbors where they need help, in the way our grandparents before us did.
Tell them to work that bit harder, that we have to be better than the kids going through Eton and Harvard and all the elite schools of China and India, that to survive and succeed, we will need to have the edge, be that bit better.
And tell them that giving more of their money to government is most often not the best way to help themselves or others. Tell them that the people who are the most careful about how they spend their money are those that earn it by their own sweat, never governments. Tell them that they are their own best hope.
For myself I’ll draw some inspiration from the cry that once was heard across these Provinces, but is now rarely uttered by those that have forgotten where we came from:
God Save Ireland. Its going to be a mighty task. But Ireland, with our deep roots and proud history, is able for it.

Or perhaps blindly following the entrepreneurial ideas of the besuited bogman, who waxed lyrical in true plastic paddy mode about turning a shilling cutting turf, Alan. doing his usual job of trying to impress his boss, becomes a turf accountant! Yo Cookie on the ball!
As Libertas watcher/slayer Peoplekorps tells us Alan's jack-booted dreams of promulgating the Big Lie have fallen at the first hurdle.
And to think the Kennedy, who railed against wasted welfare taxes and other state expenditure, did not baulk at wasting the tax-payers money when, at his master's behest, he presented faux citizen joe complaints to the Broadcasting Standards Commission.
The complaints? "Bias" in the RTE Prime Time Ganley Special.
RTE showed us Ganley was a dodgy liar.
But Alan, used to journalistic disgraces like Bruce Arnold and his print fellatio, obviously found the truth hard to swallow.

On the subject of swallowing, enter the equally odious rancid right-winger Robert Cassidy Cassidy would sell his own sexuality down the swanee for the chance to lap up the bread-crumbs falling from narcissist Catholic Fundamentalist arms dealers' tables. That's how desperate Robert/Bobert was. So see how he now is equally desperately trying to spin himself out of the career grave of his own creation.

The bold John McGuirk hit a career high note calling Libertas' own representative of the Wahhabi wing of the Catholic, Caroline Simmons, "a psychotic bitch."
There's some hope for McGuirk, who has just a little too much Machiavelli in his blood to be the true Libertas snake in the grass as epitomised by Kennedy and Cassidy above.
While not the sign of a good publicist, which may explain his employment issues, McGuirk shows some signs of actual intelligence. Because when it comes to Caroline and Christianity, it's a case of Jesus wept.

Next we have David Cochrane who loyally tried to keep his finger in the dyke until the dam-burst of truth made poor David question where his ambition was best served.

The Libertas Party Ltd, the company established by the anti-Lisbon Treaty campaigner Declan Ganley as part of his attempt to create a pan-European political party, has been dissolved.The company was incorporated in November 2008 and has not filed any accounts. In June, Mr Ganley wrote to the Companies Registration Office seeking to have the company struck off. The Libertas Foundation Ltd, also established by Mr Ganley in 2008, has similarly been dissolved.

Garda ombudsman asks for vote inquiry review

THE GARDA Síochána Ombudsman Commission has asked the Garda Síochána to review its investigation into misplaced votes at last year’s European election count for the North West constituency.

The commission has confirmed that it has some “issues” in relation to the original Garda investigation, which was prompted by a complaint lodged by unsuccessful independent candidate and Donegal-based activist Fiachra Ó Luain. As a result, a third investigation is under way.

The original investigation was requested last year by Mr Ó Luain, after a recheck of European election ballot papers at the count centre in Castlebar in June 2009.

The recheck revealed that a total of 3,000 votes belonging to Mr Ó Luain were found to have been bundled with votes for Libertas candidate Declan Ganley.

Ironically, the recheck was requested by Mr Ganley. The new figures did not have an impact on the outcome of the vote.

Mr Ó Luain found his first preference totals rising from 3,510 to 6,510 when the temporarily misplaced votes were included, but he was eliminated after the first count.

Outgoing independent MEP Marian Harkin topped the poll. Former Fianna Fáil MEP and junior minister Pat The Cope Gallagher and outgoing Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins were also elected to the three-seater constituency.

Mr Ó Luain was not satisfied with the subsequent Garda investigation, but has stressed that he was not challenging the final results of the account and said he was concerned with procedures which led to misplacement of 3,000 votes.

In his letter of complaint to the commission, he has claimed that a named garda “completed an inadequate investigation, declining to interview various witnesses, and that he forwarded an inadequate file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)”.

The commission upheld part of his complaint, and initiated an unsupervised investigation under section 94 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, which was carried out by the Garda Síochána on the commission’s behalf.

POLITICIDE - IT'S PEACE NOT TERROR THAT REALLY TERRIFIES ISRAEL

Polish Jew Raphael Lemkin lost his family to the unspeakable and unprecedented horror of the Nazi's Final Solution. The fate that befell Europe's Jews led Lemkin to singlemindedly devote his life to finding a term to describe and, in doing so, assist him criminalise Hitler’s acts.
Lemkin rightly argued that the terms of the day, 'barbarity" and "vandalism, fell tragically short of describing “the assault on all aspects of nationhood; physical, biological, political, social, cultural economic and religious.”
Given the backdrop to this relatively new word, it is not surprising that genocide analogies to Israel's policy towards the Palestinians generate instant uproar. The uproar, however, rarely goes beyond outrage at the mistaken use of the word. Therefore there is little Lemkin-like analyses of what the Israeli’s Palestinian policy should be called.
Although rarely seen or heard in the mainstream media, the policy has been linguistically pinned down, though, needless to say, it has yet to be criminalized. Writing in the New Left Review Israeli Political Scientist Baruch Kimmerling coined the term “politicide.”
Politicide was “a process aimed at destroying a certain people's prospects - indeed their very will -for legitimate self-determination and sovereignty over land they consider their homeland," Kimmerling

The eminent Palestinian Professor Sari Nusseibeh argues that “peace talks” and the conditions and preconditions thereof are a mere pretence. Because if there is one thing that Israel fears more than terror, it’s the prospect of peace with the Palestinians. Nusseibeh- allowing for the looseness of human analogy - is like a cross between John Hume and Field Day era Seamus Deane – has been called the “most dangerous Palestinian of them all.”
And the usual “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Ironic for a man that has as much to fear from Hamas and other Palestinain militants because of his opposition to suicide bombers and violence in general Leftist Knesset Yossi Sarid has spoken with exasberation about the Israeli government’s constant complaint about no credibille peace partners. Yet when there are such figures they “do their utmost to insult them, to weaken them.”
Authors of the Israel Lobby john J Mearsheimer qnd Stephen M.Walt make the same point
“Olmert like his predecessor Sharon has no interest in negotiating a peace settlement with the Palestinians…Israel would prefer occupation to peace if the latter means giving 95% or so of the West Bank to the Paestinians,” they write.
They too argue that that the Israeli government does all they it can to undermine moderates.
“In order to achieve its goals, Israel has decided to avoid any peace negotiations,” wrote that well-known radical Jimmy Carter in his recent book “Palestine. Peace Not Apartheid.”
And the goals-politicide.
Israel wanted the best parts of the West Bank, the best land, the water etc leaving “Palestinians destitute within a small and fragmented remnant of their own land.,” he wrote.
Politicide, Nusseibeh comments is the only explanation, for the actions of the Israeli Defence Forces during one of their now routine assaults on Palestinian areas.ltu
IDF troops ransacked the Palestinian Authority's Bureau of Statitistics and the Ministry of Education - attacks that can only be seen as an assault on a people's identity. In a further display of such cultural vandalism, Nusseibeh points to an IDF raid on Al Quds Centre For Media Studies where the TV broadcast of cartoons was interrupted to show pornography. The broadcasting facilities were then destroyed.

Like Israel’s initial support for Hamas to undermine Fatah, the government’s policy only strengthens those Palestinian factions that claim violence is the only effective tactic. But this is the way Israel wants it. If Hamas ceased firing rockets into Israel, the government would need to find a faction to continue the fusillade.

In order to successfully pursue its policy of politicide, Israel has to make sure there is no-one credible to talk to. So when Hamas started to slightly moderate its tone, despite being the government of the biggest prison in the world, Israel invades, pursues a policy of collective punishment and contimues laying the groundwork for another nihilistic generaton jihad.

Politicide, however, comes at a price. As Richard Ben Cramer writes In his Pulitzer prize winning “How Israel Lost”, Israel used to be “a nice little country with a problem” but now the problem has consumed the country. Everyone’s heart Is either heated or hardened. The stories emerging from the IDF about the gross human rights abuses in Gaza testify to the brutalization of Israel.
Israel can keep the land but lose its soul, Cramar writes, adding that even in the States the Leon Uris image is long gone. And no matter how hard the lobby tries, there is still a reek of something rotten in the State of Israel.

Politicide is a tragedy. One that's rarely challenged by the international commun counit, bar the occasional symbolic attempts by countries like Belgium who threaten to try and detain visiting Israeli Generals.
Some argue that in a world full of human rights abuses, such attempts are mere political grandstanding
But if injustice is not a sufficient motivation to rally a response to Israel's pretence of peace-seeking, then perhaps safety might be.

Israel, and the US have granted a degree of legitimacy to the theory that western liberal democracy is a con job designed to keep uppity arabs and other irksome natives in their place. Unfortunately the angry young man or woman in the oft talked about Arab street as well as their countetrparts in the Arab libraries and universities can find too much empirical evidence to back up this tragic view.
Israel needs to be told very loud and very clear that its insidiuos policy of creating fact is endangering not just the long term prospects of Israel but is endangering anyone getting on public transport in any city in the West.
Unfortunately because of our silence we are seen as complicit. And therefore, in the minds of 'generation jihad', we are all 'legitmate' targets.

Legatus...whose main aim is to attack one of the foundation stones upon which modern Irish democracy is built - the separation of church and state.
Like many Islamic fundamentalist groups - Legatus see this separation as morally wrong as they strive to impose a Christian form of Sharia law.
This extreme religious view goes hand in hand with a form of brutish laissez-faire capitalism that even targets movements such as "Fair Trade" as a form of moral cancer.
Although they want to impose this form of allegedly Papist Taliban governance upon us, they rail against any government moves to promote a fairer society.

Legatus look to promote the more extreme members of the Republican party (GOP) in its efforts to change the face of American politics. One source said of its founder:

“This guy seems really, predictably, interested in changing the ideology of the Republican Party and ultimately the ideology of Congress,” said Clyde Wilcox, an expert in campaign finance and political science professor at Georgetown University in Washington

Declan Ganley, and his Libertas brand have for the past year at least received succour and support from this small group of super rich Ultra Catholic, anti abortion, anti contraception and ultra conservatives who are active in politics in at least four countries. The four countries in which they have active branches are Ireland, Canada, Poland and the USA. Libertas formed in Ireland and put forward it greatest number of candidates, many linked to the ultra Catholic, far right League of Polish Families, in Poland in Junes European elections. They failed to achieve any candidates there. All in all this backing of Libertas is the greatest showing of an unelected elite attempting to influence public debate and life that I can find.
Ganley has hit paydirt by connecting with this very right-wing conservative (economically and socially) Catholic /neo Catholic unelected elite.

In late 2008 , Libertas took 7th floor offices in a building , Cortenbergh 71 in Brussels, a building owned by Shelbourne Development Group. Shelbourne is owned by a generally publicity shy property developer Garrett Kelleher http://www.shelbournedevelopment.com/property.php?id=35
Kelleher, was described by the Sunday Independent as “as a quiet person and a devout Catholic who likes to work and then go home to his family." He has also been the Chairman of the Irish chapter of Legatus.

Legatus, is a Catholic organisation with around 5000 members worldwide. The membership is drawn from Catholic CEOs, business owners, senior management and their wives. When Libertas spokesperson John McGuirk was contacted by People Korps today (Sunday 27 Sept.) and asked whether Mr. Ganley was himself a member of Legatas and whether legatus supported Libertas in their campaigns he would neither confirm nor deny, but did say that of Legatus that “They are a great bunch of guys”. The senior Libertas source alleges that Kellegher sat in on a Libertas policy meeting in the Brussels office on 3 December 2008 which is owned by his company Shelbourne Devlopment Projects. Kellegher is alleged to have contributed little to the meeting but did listen in on the ten strong Libertas group which ,included Mr. Ganley, planning of their campaign for 2009.

Increasingly active in politics ever since his religious awakening, Monaghan's interests appear to be mainly moral; specifically, he wants a state run according to conservative Catholic principles. “I believe all of history is just one big battle between good and evil,” he once told Newsweek. “I don't want to be on the sidelines.” Among the political vehicles he has created are the Ave Maria Foundation, which supports an array of conservative causes; the Ave Maria School of Law in Michigan; the Ave Maria List, which supports anti-abortion candidates; and Legatus, a lay group for rich, conservative Catholic CEOs. So in light of the fact that the Libertas brand sells a far right Christian view of society, the fact that they received their offices from Kellegher who oversaw their planning meeting on 3 December 2008, the fact that their cadre in Ireland are drawn from an ultra conservative unelected Catholic elite who hold “family values” above the rights of women, revile homosexuality, and actively campaign for political change based on their views. It is notable that Mohehan and Legatus have also been linked with the far right Heritage think tank that Ganley addressed in his first entry to the public arena as a spokesperson for moral change and in opposition to the European Union. In conclusion if is clear that Ganleys’ claims to be against unelected elites and pro democracy are a sham. He is in fact the figurehead of a front organisation which promotes ultra Catholic views and is determined to undermine secular government and society.

How Gerry Ryan turned into Mr Smug

Books Editor John Spain searches through the veteran radio star's new book for something of value, but finds that this 'tell-all' tale comes up well short

So, is Gerry Ryan's new book worth the guaranteed €100,000 he has got from Penguin Ireland for writing it?

The book does have a few redeeming qualities but the straight answer to that question has to be: Definitely Not.

Most books by minor celebs have at least one Big Revelation within their pages.

Gerry's big revelation is that he suffers (mildly) from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He's a tidiness freak who hoovers too much. It's an early indication of how mundane the rest of the book is going to be. And the main problem with it can be summed up in two words: Gerry Ryan.

Like most of the nice middle- class Dublin boys of his era who went on to find success, Gerry is self-satisfied to the point of being smug.

"My canteen is the restaurant of the Four Seasons Hotel," he writes in a chapter headed Fine Dining. "I have all my meetings in that restaurant. I know Louis Walsh does the same thing."

Shortly after that, he is talking about wine: "I think Irish people still need to wake up to the joys of sommeliers... My favourite sommelier was Pascal in Dromoland."

Or here's Gerry in a chapter called The Front of the Plane: "I go first class with Aer Lingus to JFK.

"There's a big seat, everyone's attentive and nice," he goes on. "I have a few drinks, and when I'm with my family, I see them enjoying the fruits of my labour .... Then we get to New York and there's a limousine waiting to take us to Manhattan.

"We check into Fitzpatrick's and go upstairs to one of the suites, or as we did last year, to the penthouse ... And the path is always greased. Maybe U2 are playing in Giants Stadium, and the backstage passes will be waiting for us in the Rockefeller ....

"I defy anyone to say that's not a good way to travel."

And there's more, much more, of this sort of tedious, self-admiring guff. "My favourite tipple is Jameson twelve-year-old. I like Gold Reserve ... I used to spend a lot of time collecting single malt whiskies .... At one stage I had a big collection of whiskies, fifty or sixty, and I would delight (in an obsessive compulsive way) in lining them up."

He also loves cigars: "My eldest son Rex, who was eight or nine at the time, was in charge of the two big humidors, and he had the business of keeping the cigars at the right temperature down to a fine art.

"He kept the whiskies' labels all turned out front too."

Yes, indeed, Gerry loves the finer things in life: "These days, Paris for me is staying at the Hotel Meurice up at the Jardins des Tuileries.

"You can't even get in there unless you've got a grand in your sock..." And he goes on to tell us a story about how he ordered a €2,000 Petrus thinking it was a €200 bottle.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the finer things, it's just that Gerry's need to justify himself and his compulsion to tell us about it in such detail become boring after a while.

He finds himself fascinating and seems to think that everyone else should find the minutiae of his life fascinating as well. The truth is, however, that Gerry is not particularly interesting. The only difference between him and anyone else from a similar background is that he's got a few famous friends like Harry Crosbie and Bono and he is famous for waffling on the radio.

That is the other big weakness of Gerry's book. Interspersed between the details of his own life and career are numerous short chapters with headings like How to Run the Country and Is It Possible to be Friends with a Woman? in which Gerry riffs on various subjects much as he does on radio.

It's not his fault, but the kind of waffle that sounds funny or insightful on radio and fills up hours of airtime does not work in print. Once it is written down, it seems lame. The truth is that Gerry's views are often superficial and trite, the kind of stuff you hear from young fogies in college debating societies.

There is also Gerry's irritating assumption that his imprimatur on things actually matters. Here he is on Bertie, for example: "Bertie Ahern is, without doubt, more than any other politician in the history of the Republic, substantially responsible for the success of this country, and he has been pushed, shoved, prodded and p***ked around beyond all toleration... How much was it? Two grand? Five grand? ... We're a begrudging bunch of f***ers."

Or here he is on the difference between the sexes: "I do believe that men and women are very different ... Men and women want to be celebrated and cherished and loved and taken care of, but we're utterly different."

This is the kind of guff that can sound profound when heard on the radio but it does not stand up to much scrutiny on the page.

They are one person's non-expert views on complex topics. They don't carry any more weight than the average caller to Liveline.

There is a lot more that makes this book a questionable buy for €100,000. There is Gerry's name-dropping (he even works John Banville and the former attorney general John Rogers -- misspelled as Rodgers -- into the mix).

There is a lot of mind-numbing stuff about the internal machinations in RTE and why Gerry almost left to work for Denis O'Brien.

And there are lots of boring details about Gerry's health and about how he uses Udo's Oil for arthritis in his hands and Reductil to help him lose weight.

Do we really need to know this?

Gerry confuses being open about the small details of his life with being interesting. And he seems to have little awareness of how hilarious his self-importance is at times.

One example of this is when he is writing about presenting the Eurovision: "My talent is to imbue a project with much more significance and theatricality than it actually deserves. This gives a sort of incandescence to it that makes things that are not all that bright shine very brightly. I can bring that to the party.

"But like it says in Blade Runner, the light that burns twice as brightly burns twice as fast. How brightly I have shone."

Make of that what you will. But there are some redeeming sections in the book. Gerry writes with great insight and love about his father, a slightly eccentric dentist, and his mother a flamboyant woman who herself grew up in a famous theatrical family.

He is also very good on being a father himself and raising kids in today's world.

When he sticks to what he knows and what he really cares about, he writes well and there are sections of the book which are very honest and moving. The great pity is that being G. Ryan just keeps getting in the way.

It is indeed a tragic day for the country. Even the Irish Times are at it. They quote Baudrillard and hey presto before you can say 'simulacrum'- it's tighten the zeitgeist time, we're diving deep into the tabloid void.

Once we were a nation of (genuine) newspaper readers- now we are Brits.

Where did all these cunts come from?

The one thing I will say respect to Gerry Ryan is that he would spit out the Thought Police and Bully Boys on Politics.ie.
And the only ire the postings under "That Gasoline Smell" - erased unless otherwise quoted by indignant others - would have arounsed on the Ryan line would have been directed at David Cochrane's men-cubs.
Their toothless necro-fellatio would make a man, even one predisposed to smugness like Gerry, spit.

The Master Musicians announce their summer festival will be held 4-6June 2010 in their village in Morocco. Guests will stay with the musicians and their families and experience three days and nights of ritual Sufi music in its natural setting. On Saturday 5 June the musicians will perform the Boujeloud ritual in the village square through the night. In July 2008 the Master Musicians of Joujouka hosted the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in their village in the southern Rif Mountains of Northern Morocco. The festival was a celebration of fortieth anniversary of Brian Jones’ recording the iconic LP Brian Jones presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka (Rolling Stones Records 1971). The festival brought the families of old Masters now passed on and a group of visitors from abroad including old friends of the errant Rolling Stone.

In 2009 the Master Musicians festival moved to June as the temperature at the end of July can be above 40C. The festival was a great success and was reported on in The Wire magazine October, 2009.

Guests will experience life in Joujouka staying with the musicians and their families in their isolated village. The Master Musicians of Joujouka will play in intimate sessions around their madrassa/school. The highlight of the festival wwill be the village’s celebration of the Boujeloud ritual in the village square.

Places at the festival are strictly limited as due to accommodation limitations with the families in Joujouka/Jajouka. Guests will be collected from Ksar El Kebir the nearest town to Joujouka on Friday 5th June and will be brought to the village. Full board will be provided. Food will be prepared in traditional Joujouka fashion from locally sourced produced. Joujouka is a farming community well as Sufi trance music the village is famous for its beautiful olives and olive oil.

The festival is booking now. The price for the main two days of the festival 4-5 June is €250 euro.

Kelleher firm owes €106,000 card debt

Shelbourne Development Group, the US-based property vehicle controlled by Irishman Garrett Kelleher, suffered the ignominy of having its commercial credit card account cancelled by Bank of America last year as the lender began a legal battle seeking payment on millions of dollars worth of loans advanced to the company that it claims haven't been repaid on time.

Bank of America now claims that as of last month, Shelbourne Development Group has not paid an outstanding commercial credit card balance of $106,000.

Court documents just filed in the US reveal that the group was granted a commercial and business Visa card account back in 2007. In its credit card application, Shelbourne Development said that the commercial account was likely to rack up expense and travel-related expenses of $750,000 a year, and that it would probably be used for procurement purposes that would incur likely amounts of $1.2m on the company cards.

Development

Mr Kelleher's company has been planning to build the world's tallest residential building, the Chicago Spire, in the American city. Construction began in 2007, and while about 30pc of the apartments in the Spire were subject to advance sales, development has halted.

Bank of America has sued Shelbourne Developments and Mr Kelleher personally for the return of millions of dollars in loans and interest that were to be used to construct the Spire.

Mr Kelleher and Shelbourne Development in turn sued Bank of America, claiming it "willfully and wantonly" engaged in a systematic pattern of deception.

I'm sure the shadowy figures in Mossad are wondering 'why all the fuss this time round.'
We didn't hear much when the Hamas guy in Damascus was killed by a car bomb not so long ago.
Or the one before that in Amman. The guy that Mossad they failed to posion and got caught.
Then going back a while, wasn't there a waiter wasted in a mistaken identity mess in Scandinavia.
Maybe "forged passports" from other countries were not used in those missions. But it's a big maybe. Damascus does not welcome Israelis passports.
And if you are off to assassinate Palestinian officials, an Israelis passport is not an "asset".

So why now? Why are we all talking about it?
I think what happened here - why the story has blown up and why it has forced "outrage" from countries whose intelligence arms may have given tacit approval - is that this was the first CCTV assassination.

And that meant the 24hr news channels could lead with the story and then run heavily with it.
If we didn't have our tennis players getting out of the lift and the whole crew arriving and then splitting dodge, we would have had a stand up outside the hotel and then the story would have faded into an occasional feature piece.

So let's thank CCTV for our new found morality.

I couldn’t write this morning. I had a tonne of copy-writing sitting in front of me, and I was just drawing a blank. To be honest, things haven’t really improved, and so this post is as much an attempt to get the juices flowing again as it is an expression of my desire to write about anything in particular.

I had two conversations this morning, both with friends, both of them unemployed for months now. And just now, I’ve noticed that another friend, David Cochrane, has written a blogpost on the same subject. I, myself, have been surviving on the bits and bobs I pick up here and there, but comfortable I am not. The Dole beckons unless there’s a significant upturn.

Now, I’ve always been philosophical about rough times. As in all things, they pass. There will again, in the future, be times of great plenty, both personally and for us as a country. But it struck me today just how many dear friends are in an awful place, financially. And it struck me further just how talented those people are. We’re not talking people who were in the building trade and went down with the ship. We’re talking about people with huge experience in advertising, accounting, IT, and other fields. With qualifications. And education. And experience. All sitting on the sidelines, drawing benefits in order to feed themselves.

And there’s little hope of light at the end of their respective tunnels. Employers can handpick the person they want, and pay them less than they are objectively worth, and do so while throwing hundreds of surplus CVs on the scrapheap.

It’s bleak out there, and it’s not getting any better. One friend appears to have succumbed to total depression, staying in bed for most of the day and rarely going out. Others, with jobs – at least on paper – are struggling to maintain the pretence that they are comfortable when they are anything but. When you ring people and ask them to go for drinks, they are amazingly busy even though when they were working they had all the time in the world. We’re still, I think, in denial about how bad things are.

10% of mortgage holders are in trouble, living every day in the fear of losing their homes. Earnings have fallen dramatically but supermarket prices are as high as ever, and the cost of a pint has actually increased. Small time developers have gone bust – but you see them in the clubs anyway, pretending everything is ok.

It’s bizarre. I’m lucky, because I have a wonderful family and great parents. I’ll never end up on the street, or without a roof over my head, at least while they are alive. My own mortgage doesn’t have to worry me because they know how bad things are. But there are people out there facing absolute destitution, and the most society can offer them is €196 a week. Try living on it, some time.

I’m not sure this post has a point to it, other than to suggest that perhaps a large part of the media and political elites are in utter denial. The everyday struggles of people just to retain their dignity are not the stories we read about or see on television. We hear lots about the national debt, and how it’s growing, but the mountain of personal debt is what’s really crushing this economy – and worse, crushing lives.

I’m a deficit hawk. I think the Government should spend what it can raise. But it seems to me that now, more than ever, we need to use the national credit card to invest in a stimulus programme, or what the Americans are currently calling a “jobs bill”. We can’t of course, because we signed up to the stability and growth pact. In Europe, “stability” is a more pertinent economic consideration than unemployment.

So what happens next? How long are these people that I know, and the hundreds of thousands like them, going to be left on the sidelines to waste away whilst we await the recovery? It will come, because even the most incompetent administration cannot escape the economic cycle, but when it does, we may have lost a generation of young people who get skipped over in favour of fresh graduates.

I don’t know. I had missed the worst of the recession up until now, both in terms of personal finance and awareness of what was going on around me. This morning, for some reason, it hit me pretty hard.

It is, indeed, the economy, stupid.

Right-Wing No Campaign

The “No” camp also included two right-wing groups, Libertas and Coir. Libertas was set up by Declan Ganley, an unpleasant conservative businessman who was given a big platform by the media during the first referendum campaign in preference to more progressive and honourable figures on the “No” side. He subsequently tried to launch Libertas as a political party which contested this year’s European elections on an ultra-conservative / Eurosceptic platform (its founding charter gave Libertas a mandate to provide financial support to businesses facing strike action). Ganley himself ran for a seat in the west of Ireland and polled reasonably well without emerging victorious, while the Libertas candidate in Dublin crashed and burned delightfully in spite of her massive campaigning budget. The Libertas chief had promised to bow out of politics after his European efforts proved fruitless; he didn’t stick to that pledge, but he was a much diminished figure in the second campaign.

That left Coir, an even more reactionary group with roots in anti-abortion campaigning which appears to derive its funding from right-wing fundamentalist sources in the USA. Coir has a knack for designing eye-catching posters and spent more than any other group on the “No” side. It opted for Fox News-style hysterical scaremongering: one poster carried the text “Trust EU assurances? Not on their lives” alongside pictures of a foetus and an elderly woman. The suggestion that EU bureaucrats are drawing up death lists in Brussels as we speak didn’t seem to have much impact on public opinion: that particular brand of reactionary Catholicism has probably had its day, although Coir will certainly do their best to sabotage any attempt to repeal Ireland’s ban on abortion.

The US Supreme Court Justices Kennedy, Roberts Jr. (am I wrong to think that 'Jr.' is code for 'I am a belong to the sort of family that is preoccupied by inventing a lineage'? And that guy using Jr. is also saying 'hey, look at me. I express MY filial piety every day. What do you do?), Justices Scalia, Alito Jr. (again....isn't it kinda 'unamerican' - ugly concept, but what the hell - to demean your individuality by linking your name, your identity as a person, to your daddy's name?) and Clarence Thomas voted this week to give corporations (disguised in the specific case as conservative 'non-profit' Citizens United - christ) the same free speech rights as US citizens.

Don't they know that corporations aren't people? Don't they see that profit maximisation was not the goal being articulated by the First Amendment? Is it too liberal to judge that a corporation's purpose is not sufficiently rich and varied and layered and often conflicted to be equated to the aspirations and understanding of a human?

Is it too much to fantasize that they would be keen to protect the already crappy quality of US political debate?

Or that they might look at most European election laws to see how those judiciaries are preoccupied by the hijacking of politics by money?

I guess they would find it 'unamerican' to actually follow european judicial instincts, but maybe they could, at least, take a hint?

Can we now say - have you understood what you have done, you dumb, dangerous fuckwits?

Before you go ahead and enjoy this article, Barricade recalls a profile the Guardian ran on Peter some years ago.

A hack had followed Peter on the campaign trail in Huddersfield or some other dank Northern hell-hole where life was the pits and is now just a chorus of coughs into blood stained kleenex down dole office.

Peter had slithered his way out of the constituency which was the best ad for heroin use ever made. Anyhow, here he was back on the campaign trail. And feeling a tad peckish, Peter decided to go into a local chippie.

Mandy ordered his single and then allegedly asked for a 'portion of guacamole on the side.'

Now we here at Barricade hate Mandy as much as the next man and we would love to think he would make such a mushy pea of a fuck up.

But. But. But it's just too perfect. It says everything that needs to be said about 'New Labour.'

It's so perfect, could it be true?

And on the subject of Mandy's constituency - Hartlepool? - the Guardian piece informed us that houses sell for £19,000 there. That's just a grand less that the cost of Peter's watch.

And a side order of salsa with that.

There’s talk of emigration in the air. It’s everywhere I go. Parties. Work. In the supermarket. My daughter is working herself half to death to get good grades at GSCE and can’t see the point because she won’t be going to university, because she doesn’t have a beak or flippers or a qualification in washing windscreens at the lights. She wonders, often, why we don’t live in America .

Then you have the chaps and chapesses who can’t stand the constant raids on their wallets and their privacy. They can’t understand why they are taxed at 50% on their income and then taxed again for driving into the nation’s capital. They can’t understand what happened to the hunt for the weapons of mass de struction. They can’t understand anything. They see the Highway Wombles in those brand new 4x4s that they paid for, and they see the M4 bus lane and they see the speed cameras and the community support officers and they see the Albanians stealing their wheelbarrows and nothing can be done because it’s racist.

And they see Alistair Darling handing over £4,350 of their money to not sort out the banking crisis that he doesn’t understand because he’s a small-town solicitor, and they see the stupid war on drugs and the war on drink and the war on smoking and the war on hunting and the war on fun and the war on scientists and the obsession with the climate and the price of train fares soaring past £1,000 and the Guardian power-brokers getting uppity about one shot baboon and not uppity at all about all the dead soldiers in Afghanistan, and how they got rid of Blair only to find the lying twerp is now going to come back even more powerful than ever, and they think, “I’ve had enough of this. I’m off.”

It’s a lovely idea, to get out of this stupid, Fairtrade, Brown-stained, Mandelson-skewed, equal-opportunities, multicultural, carbon-neutral, trendily left, regionally assembled, big-government, trilingual, mosque-drenched, all-the-pigs-are-equal, property-is-theft hellhole and set up shop somewhere else. But where?

You can’t go to France because you need to complete 17 forms in triplicate every time you want to build a greenhouse, and you can’t go to Switzerland because you will be reported to your neighbours by the police and subsequently shot in the head if you don’t sweep your lawn properly, and you can’t go to Italy because you’ll soon tire of waking up in the morning to find a horse’s head in your bed because you forgot to give a man called Don a bundle of used notes for “organising” a plumber.

You can’t go to Australia because it’s full of things that will eat you, you can’t go to New Zealand because they don’t accept a nyone who is more than 40 and you can’t go to Monte Carlo because they don’t accept anyone who has less than 40 mill. And you can’t go to Spain because you’re not called Del and you weren’t involved in the Walthamstow blag. And you can’t go to Germany ... because you just can’t.

The Caribbean sounds tempting, but there is no work, which means that one day, whether you like it or not, you’ll end up like all the other expats, with a nose like a burst beetroot, wondering if it’s okay to have a small sharpener at 10 in the morning. And, as I keep explaining to my daughter, we can’t go to America because if you catch a cold over there, the health system is designed in such a way that you end up without a house. Or dead.

Canada’s full of people pretending to be French, South Africa’s too risky, Russia’s worse and everywhere else is too full of snow, too full of flies or too full of people who want to cut your head off on the internet. So you can dream all you like ab out upping sticks and moving to a country that doesn’t help itself to half of everything you earn and then spend the money it gets on bus lanes and advertisements about the dangers of salt. But wherever you go you’ll wind up an alcoholic or dead or bored or in a cellar, in an orange jumpsuit, gently wetting yourself on the web. All of these things are worse than being persecuted for eating a sandwich at the wheel.

I see no reason to be miserable. Yes, Britain now is worse than it’s been for decades, but the lunatics who’ve made it so ghastly are on their way out. Soon, they will be back in Hackney with their South African nuclear-free peace polenta. And instead the show will be run by a bloke whose dad has a wallpaper shop and possibly, terrifyingly, a twerp in Belgium whose fruitless game of hunt-the-WMD has netted him £15m on the lecture circuit.

So actually I do see a reason to be miserable. Which is why I think it’s a good idea to tie Peter Mandelson to a v an. Such an act would be cruel and barbaric and inhuman. But it would at least cheer everyone up a bit in the meantime.

Declan Ganley, demagogue or dilettante?

I AM in Donegal, on the west coast of Ireland, at the end of a long day following Declan Ganley on the Euro-campaign trail. Mr Ganley, a rich businessman, came from nowhere to become a leading player in last summer’s Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, heading up a slick No campaign that left the government and main opposition parties floundering.

Mr Ganley inspires strong emotions in Brussels: after he helped bring about the Irish No vote, he became a bogey-man for some surprisingly senior European politicians, who accused him of telling outrageous lies about the treaty. Some would brief journalists that he was a man with close links to the Pentagon, and hint that his funding came from forces in America who wished to block Lisbon, for fear Europe would become too powerful a rival. Jean-Pierre Jouyet, the then French Europe minister, said something pretty close to this in public last year.

Now, those same Brussels grandees seem to have decided that Mr Ganley is a joke, as they read opinion polls showing that the Irish are likely to vote to Yes when (not if) they are invited to vote again on Lisbon this autumn. He is also running in the European Parliament elections next month, as the founder of a new outfit, Libertas, which set out to become the first pan-European political party, with candidates in all 27 member countries of the EU. He has not made all 27, but he has 500 candidates signed up to run, some of them sitting members of the parliament.

I heard him tell people on the campaign trail today that he was expecting to win 106 seats, which would make Libertas one of the most powerful blocks in the European Parliament. This is nonsense. Depending on which polls you believe, he is in fact heading for somewhere between a small handful and no seats at all. His own run in Ireland Northwest is not looking good for him: he is polling below 10%, though it is generally reckoned a candidate needs close to 20% of first preference votes to make it (three seats are available in this enormous constituency, and will be elected on a transferable vote system).

I will have more considered thoughts to offer in a column later this week. Here is an immediate impression. Mr Ganley is a puzzling figure: neither a scary demagogue, nor a millionaire dilettante, but with elements of both those ills.

A lot of his hardcore supporters on the trail are conservative Catholics, who volunteer that their top issue is abortion. Other elements of the No campaign last summer were happy to lie, flat out, and say that the Lisbon Treaty might impose abortion on demand in Ireland. Mr Ganley, when asked about this, is more careful, but still pretty cynical. When asked about this, he starts his replies by conceding that abortion is not one of the legal competences of the European Union. If he were playing entirely straight that, really, should be that. No EU treaty will affect abortion laws at the national level, because it has been obvious for years that this is a very sensitive issue. So for years, the EU has steered well clear of it.

But instead Mr Ganley goes on to tell voters that Libertas will have to be “very vigilant” against the “risk” that the European Court of Justice will seek to extend its powers over abortion, euthanasia or other such issues. And the ECJ’s actions cannot be predicted, he says. “Nobody in Brussels should ever get their hands on that decision-making process,” he told a well-attended public meeting tonight, to rousing applause. On this then, and some other issues, he is at the very least a slick populist.

But at other times, he is oddly amateurish. He has been travelling a great deal launching Libertas campaigns in other countries, so has not spent much time campaigning for himself at home. So his time in Ireland today, three weeks out from the elections, was presumably rather precious. I have covered election campaigns on four continents over the past decade, and I can honestly say I have never spent more time watching a party leader fart around to less effect. We canvassed a street in Collooney where there were no voters (eventually ambushing a postman in his van, to give local television a shot of him talking to a voter), then visited a fishing company behind closed doors, then a boatyard and harbour. It was all very friendly, and some extremely polite women supporters with purple sweaters, Virgin Mary brooches and Libertas t-shirts came out to say hello. But the normal business of retail politics was almost ignored: no shopping centres, commuters at a railway station, or even places with crowds. When a nice man offered us a trip on his boat up the harbour to pick up the pilot off an ocean-going ship, off we went for 20 minutes, chugging round the harbour. I do not want to sound churlish, given that the scenery at Killybegs harbour is astonishingly pretty and I was allowed to go along on the boat trip. But most of the people Mr Ganley waved at while we chugged about were Norwegian sailors, who do not have a vote in Ireland as far as I know.

He handled a public meeting tonight pretty well, and he had the crowd really going at some points. As a connoisseur of political cant, I have to confess I did enjoy one moment that went slightly awry. His favourite argument is that the European Commission, which has the exclusive right to propose new EU laws, is staffed by unknown and unknowable “faceless bureaucrats”, who must be made accountable to voters. In a hokey question and answer moment, he challenged the crowd to name a commission official. “Hands up who knows a single one of them,” he said.

To his visible surprise, a tiny old man with a tweed jacket and snowy white hair meekly raised his hand. “There’s that lady Catherine Day, who is the secretary general of the commission, and she was on the radio,” said the old man, correctly identifying the most senior non-political functionary at the commission. “And she was saying these bureaucrats do have to travel around Europe bending ears to get things done.”

Trying to salvage his rhetorical gambit, Mr Ganley demanded: “So where is she from?”

“Well, Ireland somewhere,” the old man said, again correctly.

“I think she’s a Dublin lady,” a woman said from the back, presumably imagining she being helpful.

With only the faintest hint of alarm, Mr Ganley moved to seize back control: “Well, I have heard of Catherine Day,” he said briskly, “but she is not exactly a household name.” Then he slipped back into his stump speech.

He makes much of not being a professional politician. But though I am entirely neutral about whether Mr Ganley deserves a seat in the EP or not, I would modestly suggest two thoughts from my observers’ seat at the back of the room: real politicians are terrifyingly disciplined about campaigning, and real politicians never, ever patronise their audiences.

Ombudsman seeks garda poll inquiry

THE GARDA Ombudsman is to ask the Garda Commissioner to investigate a complaint about the handling of a previous Garda investigation into the misallocation of 3,000 votes during the European Parliament election count in Castlebar last June.

The Garda Ombudsman has upheld, in part, a complaint by former North West Independent candidate Fiachra Ó Luain.

Mr Ó Luain has claimed that a Garda investigation of a complaint he made on June 7th was inadequate. He has also alleged the garda involved in the investigation forwarded an inadequate file on the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Ó Luain made a formal complaint to gardaí about the misallocation of ballots during the counting of European election votes in Castlebar last June. At the time, Libertas candidate Declan Ganley requested a recheck, during which it was discovered that Mr Ganley had been credited with 3,000 of Mr Ó Luain’s first preference votes in error.

In his letter of complaint to the Garda Ombudsman, Mr Ó Luain claimed that a named garda “completed an inadequate investigation, declining to interview various witnesses, and that he forwarded an inadequate file to the DPP”.

This part of Mr Ó Luain’s complaint is what will now be investigated by the Garda Commissioner.

The ombudsman’s office has now confirmed to Mr Ó Luain: “The Garda Ombudsman has considered the allegations of misbehaviour made in your complaint and has determined that your complaint is part admissible.”

The ombudsman has also informed Mr Ó Luain that depending on the result of the investigation, disciplinary proceedings may be taken. He can also have the matter reviewed by the ombudsman if he is not satisfied with that investigation.

Mr Ó Luain said he welcomed the ombudsman’s review of his complaint. “Like any citizen I would like to think that the law is on my side; however, since June, I have felt that certain gardaí as well as the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley, have been determined to do as little as possible, despite my repeated requests for full investigations.

“Although I feel a sense of cautious optimism, relief and vindication by this Garda Ombudsman decision, I am still baffled that those in Government and the opposition have not made more of an issue of this. A source within Leinster House told me that it is because I am an Independent that so little is being done about this misallocation. What does this tell us about the integrity of our elected representatives and the electoral process?” he asked.

IRELAND'S anticipated new European Commissioner was urged last night to clarify her past business relationship with Lisbon 'No' campaigner Declan Ganley.

Former Fianna Fail minister Maire Geoghegan-Quinn is widely expected to end a 15-year absence from senior political office today and be named as the country's appointee to the commission.

Former European Parliament President Pat Cox was the only other name featuring in government circles last night.

But Ms Geoghegan-Quinn is almost certain to be named as the country's appointee after Taoiseach Brian Cowen consults with the Cabinet today.

After retiring from politics in the 1997 general election, Ms Geoghegan-Quinn worked briefly with Mr Ganley's group of companies.

Executive

The most reliable version of her work is that she held an executive post in Ganley International for a short period, before moving on. She was a former Communications Minister and Mr Ganley's companies were involved in telecoms at the time.

But Mr Ganley's business interests have come under attack from Fianna Fail over the past 18 months, since he burst onto the campaign scene with his Libertas organisation.

Ironically, the party is now on the verge of appointing a former business associate of Mr Ganley to a plum EU post.

Fine Gael's European Affairs spokesperson Lucinda Creighton said reported links to Mr Ganley needed to cleared up before Ms Geoghegan-Quinn was vetted by the European Parliament.

"We saw on the last occasion it's not just a formality now the appointment of a commissioner," Ms Creighton said.

"After two referendum defeats in the past seven years, it would be really embarrassing if this became a story."

Mr Cox's name continued to feature as the Government is believed to want to secure the Innovation Commissioner portfolio since it carries a big spend on research and development.

Ms Geoghehan-Quinn is tipped to become the EU's Budget Commissioner, as a result of her experience in the European Court of Auditors.

There has been intense speculation about whether it would be Ms Geoghegan-Quinn or Mr Cox, but it is understood gender politics played a role in the decision. EU Commission President Jose Manual Barroso told all 27 countries that he wanted women nominated, but even including Ms Geoghegan-Quinn, only eight are women.

In the coming months the Budget Commissioner will be at the heart of discussions on trimming the EU's €55bn agriculture spending from 40pc to 30pc of the total budget.

Václav Klaus, from Russia with love

He describes himself as "a European dissident" and the Russian media has welcomed him with open arms. On a state visit this week, the Czech President showed that he is keen to develop economic and personal ties with Moscow — a policy which Hospodářské Noviny remarks is not without its disadvantages.

Václav Klaus' state visit to Russia comes just a few days after he provoked an outcry in Europe by imposing yet another obstacle to his signing of the Lisbon Treaty. In Moscow he told his hosts that he was "seriously concerned by the plan to reinforce European integration."

Klaus is one Czech politician who is not afraid of adopting a strongly pro-Russian stance, unlike Mirek Topolánek's government, which backed a policy of stronger links with the United States until it collapsed in April.

On the occasion of a visit to the United States in September, Klaus declared that Moscow was much less of a threat to the Czech Republic than an over-regulated European Union. In a recent interview with [the neo-conservative American daily] the Washington Times, he averred that "the political system and freedom in Russia is now the highest and the best in the history of Russia in the last two millennia."

Russian media idol

When he was prime minister from 1992 to 1997, Václav Klaus generally adopted a pro-western line. It was only after he left the government that he began to explicitly criticize European integration and the United States. This change of course was later confirmed when he expressed his reservations about NATO's bombardment of Yugoslavia in 1999.

It was also during this period that the Russian media first took an interest in him. Today, many Russian journalists actively promote Klaus to the extent that he now occupies much more space in the Russian media than all of the other Eastern European leaders. His statements on "the gratuitous Russophobia" of the Western elites are especially popular with pro-Kremlin journalists, and also with the renowned Russian political analyst Mikhaïl Delyagin, who in a recent article on the Lisbon crisis presented an alleged quote from Klaus, which states that accession to the European Union has resulted in considerable financial losses for the Czech Republic.

"In many respects, Václav Klaus is something of a dinosaur from the period when a bi-polar division prevailed in world politics. Having attempted and failed to carve a pro-western niche for himself — a political role that was occupied by Václav Havel — it was only logical that he should turn towards Russia," remarks political scientist Michael Romancov, a professor at the Metropolitan University of Prague.

Notwithstanding his popularity in the Russian media, the leadership in the Kremlin has no scruples about dispelling any illusions that he may have about his status in international politics. On a previous visit to Russia, Klaus attempted to reassure Vladimir Putin that the American antimissile radar would not be directed towards Russia — an assertion, which amused the Russian Prime Minister, and to which he laughingly replied, "But in any case, you wouldn't have any influence over that." The Czech President was visibly stung by the exchange.

Increasingly rare visits to the West

Medvedev is without a doubt the most important head of state to invite Klaus since he was re-elected. However, he has only rarely been received by his western counterparts on state visits. "In part this is due to the fact that he was so hyperactive after his first election, when he visited a large number of countries, which means that he now has to wait a few years before he is invited again.

However, there is also a more obvious reason: heads of state do not want to invite him now because of his position on European integration," says the Chairman of the Christian democrats and a former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cyril Svoboda. Ireland is one of the few western countries to have welcomed Klaus on an official visit since his re-election. But even there he managed to fall out with the government by publicly voicing his support for Declan Ganley's anti-Lisbon Libertas movement.

Relations between Klaus and his French opposite number, Nicolas Sarkozy, are particularly fraught, with both heads of state launching regular attacks on each other via the media. Lost recently in December of 2008, Klaus indirectly accused Sarkozy of damaging the European Union. Last year, he traveled to France twice but he did not meet with any political leaders in the course of his visits.

During his visit to Moscow, Václav Klaus "encouraged Russian companies to participate in calls for tender for new units to be added to the Temelín nuclear power station," notes Hospodářské Noviny. According to the Prague business daily, Russian companies voiced their interest in the Czech energy sector at the meeting of the Russian-Czech commission, held in Prague in September, which was attended by Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov and representatives of Loukoil, Russia's biggest private oil company. The Hospodářské Noviny report is quick to point out that Loukil "was the Russian sponsor of Blue Planet in Green Shackles," Klaus's book in which he dismisses concerns about global warming.

Libertas rejects claim it owes group €100,000

PARTY FUNDS: A POLITICIAN that led Libertas’s European election campaign in Spain has said the group led by Declan Ganley had not paid an outstanding debt of more than €100,000. Libertas has rejected the claims.

Miguel Duran’s party, Libertas: Citizens of Spain, failed to win a single seat in last June’s elections. “I agreed to lead Spanish Libertas after Mr Ganley came with promises to finance us to the tune of €4 million,” he said.

“He assured me he had funding of more than €70 million for his European operation.

“We ran a cheap campaign because we had no money and had to borrow from friends. I began campaigning in April after Mr Ganley again promised to send money. But there was still no sign of it.

“When he came here his excuse was that his luggage had been stolen. He eventually paid me €19,950 in cash – I don’t know why it was such an odd number, perhaps someone forgot to put the last €50 note in the bundle,” he added.

“He kept on saying the money was on the way, but it never arrived.

“I have since learned that he made similar promises to other European groups and they never received any money either . . .”

A spokesman for Libertas, John McGuirk, yesterday rejected the contention made by Mr Duran that money was still outstanding. “No invoices have been received from Spain. Because there are no invoices, payments were not made.”

Mr McGuirk said the Spanish group had been repeatedly asked for invoices and said that invoices it had received had been paid.

Spanish Libertas, a loose coalition of three small centre-left regional parties, was not anti-Europe, said Mr Duran. He said he is pro-Europe, but he is against the way politicians are running Europe. “I believe in a united states of Europe, but not one ruled by lobby groups and unelected officials. This is what I signed up for. We wanted to change Europe from within, or at least I thought he did too.

“Now I think he wanted to frighten Europeans for his own ends and many of us fell for it.”

Mr Duran (54), a Barcelona-based lawyer blind from infancy, began as a braille operator and rose rapidly to become, at only 32, director general of Once, Spain’s powerful organisation for the blind and disabled. When private television channels were legalised in Spain he left Once to head Tele 5.

But in 1998 he was charged with insider trading and other financial irregularities. He was finally acquitted last year.

Ganley management firm posts €2.5m loss

GANLEY CORPORATE Management Ltd, a company associated with anti-Lisbon Treaty campaigner Declan Ganley, had €209,557 in cash on December 31st, 2008, according to accounts filed recently.

The abridged accounts show the company’s accumulated losses at year’s end were €2.57 million, down from €2.59 million the previous year. No profit figure is given in the accounts.

The cash balance at year’s end compared with €14,851 at the previous year’s end. However, creditors due to be paid within one year also increased substantially, to €135,408 at December 31st, 2008, from €16,248 the previous year.

The directors of the company, which is based at Mr Ganley’s home at Moyne Park, Tuam, Co Galway, are Mr Ganley and his brother Seán. The company’s two issued €2 shares are owned by Golden Bay Holdings Ltd, Charlestown, Nevis, West Indies, the company’s ultimate parent, according to the accounts. The Ganley brothers have no interest in the shares of the parent company, the accounts state.

Mr Ganley previously told The Irish Times he uses Ganley Corporate Management for the development of business projects. He owned the company’s shares up to December 31st, 2005.

Ganley Corporate Management was the owner of another Tuam company, Rivada Networks Ltd, in May 2006. By the end of that year, Rivada Networks was the subsidiary of a US company, Rivada Networks LLC, which has telecommunications contracts in the US.

Charter Group says treaty vital for jobs and workers

CAMPAIGN MESSAGES: THE PRO-LISBON Charter Group has said the treaty is vital for jobs and workers’ rights and the EU is not a conspiracy against the Irish working classes.

The group comprises trade union activists campaigning for a Yes vote. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Charter Group chairman Des Geraghty said Ireland’s future depended on export-led growth and this required a strong economy in Europe. “Only Yes can help achieve this,” he said.

Meanwhile, at a Say No campaign press conference, which featured many activists on the left opposed to the treaty, the campaign said multinational companies were in Ireland to maximise profits.

“They made €17.5 billion here last year so another No won’t scare them off. Lisbon would make the recession worse by giving the EU further power to restrict Government spending, which means that fewer people can buy goods and services so more jobs are lost,” the campaign stated.

Regional secretary of Unite trade union Jimmy Kelly said recent rulings by the European Court of Justice on workers’ rights represented “a stab wound” to the social Europe promised at the time of the Nice Treaty.

“What was needed was a protocol which addressed those judgments in the new Lisbon Treaty. It would have moved the issue of workers’ rights to the primacy that it should have had.

“This was absolutely something that could have been done and would have put us in a position that workers in Ireland and across Europe would have supported Lisbon,” he said.

Secretary of the Charter Group Blair Horan said it was “absolute lies” to suggest the minimum wage would be affected by passing the treaty. He also said controversial European Court of Justice rulings such as the Laval case – which had been highlighted by the No side – would have no impact here.

Mr Horan said Ireland had extensive minimum wage protection, not just a basic minimum wage of €8.65 per hour, but also higher legally enforceable rates in a range of sectors such as construction, hotels, retail and catering.

“These minimum wage rates apply to all workers in Ireland irrespective of their nationality. Workers are fully protected on pay and the Laval judgment has no impact here. The claims of a race to the bottom are just not factual,” he said.

The Charter Group also criticised Libertas as being anti-worker. Mr Geraghty said the Libertas articles of association suggested it would contribute funds to anybody resisting interference in its business by strike movements or organisations.

However, Libertas chairman Declan Ganley said he was unaware what was in its articles of association. “We should check but I don’t know what it says. We just use boiler plate [standard wording] memorandum and articles of association. But I’m not anti-anything.”

Meanwhile, at the Say No press conference, Patricia McKenna of the People’s Movement said the legal guarantees secured by the Government were not in the Lisbon Treaty and were not legally binding. She also criticised what she described as “gross and illegal interference” in the campaign by the European Commission for distributing a supplement supporting the treaty in Sunday newspapers.

Then we finally are told that ...yes they do have the office.
But they supposedly pay 'rent' for it.

What they wont answer is why a major developer, who like all the others you- Joe Public- will be paying taxes to bail out for years, sat in on Libertas meetings.

Pie in the Sky

What happened when a billionaire pizza mogul tried to build an elite Catholic law school.

In the fall of 1998, Steve Safranek, a devout Catholic professor, found himself at a crossroads. For nearly a decade, he had been teaching at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, a small Catholic enclave in the heart of the rust belt, and, like many institutions in the region, it was undergoing wrenching change. Enrollment had taken such a tumble that administrators were considering cutting a third of the faculty, and there was growing anxiety among conservative professors, who felt the school was drifting from its traditional Catholic roots. The turmoil only deepened that September when a pro-choice Michigan Supreme Court justice was invited to give the oath at the annual Red Mass, a centuries-old ceremony where Catholic lawyers, judges, and politicians ask God’s blessing and guidance in their daily work. Some faculty and staff turned out with picket signs; others, like Safranek, simply chose not to attend. This touched off a bitter dispute with the administration.

Around this time, Safranek decided he would pray every day for fifty-four days straight to St. Thomas More, the Renaissance lawyer and statesman who coined the word “utopia.” As he recited his Hail Marys, an idea began to percolate: Why not start a new Catholic law school? A few weeks later, Safranek caught word that Tom Monaghan, the eccentric billionaire who founded Domino’s Pizza, had sold his business and was planning to devote his fortune to conservative Catholic causes. So he hashed out a proposal and got four other University of Detroit Mercy professors and an administrator to sign on. To show they were serious, each of them offered to chip in $20,000 and work for free for a year.

Monaghan was intrigued. In early December, he invited Safranek and the others to Domino’s Farm, a half-mile-long office complex with numerous quirky amenities— among them a herd of buffalo and a petting zoo—which he had built in Ann Arbor Township. The group met in a small, sparsely furnished room, where they discussed their ideas for the new venture. “There was some talk about Catholic law schools, generally; most American ones were started as technical professional entities to keep graduates of Catholic colleges around for three more years,” Safranek recalls. “We wanted to build something different—a school where traditional Catholic values and thought were built into every part of the curriculum.” At the same time, Safranek and company wanted to avoid the trap that many new schools fall into; because they’re strapped for cash, they end up with scantly stocked libraries, second-rate faculty, and middling students. Their aim was to build a world-class institution, one that would churn out lawyers capable of leaving their stamp on the larger culture.

Once the professors were done speaking, Monaghan went around the table and asked them one by one if he could count on their commitment. They all said he could. Monaghan then promised to throw his financial might behind the project—while he didn’t settle on a specific dollar figure, the numbers he batted around were in the tens of millions. Finally, the group retreated to Monaghan’s office, a two-story suite with raw-silk ceilings and leather floors, for drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Through the window, they could see buffalo grazing and a light snow falling on the brown hills.

After the meeting, Monaghan approached Bernard Dobranski, the dean of the law school at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and asked him to head up the new venture, known as Ave Maria School of Law. It was a risky proposition for a seasoned academic— giving up tenure, a generous salary, and the promise of long sabbaticals to take part in a startup venture. But the idea piqued Dobranski’s interest. The following day, he asked his friend, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, to lunch and sought his advice. Scalia pressed him to take the job. The conservative justice was later flown out on Monaghan’s private jet to consult on the curriculum. Scalia was so enthusiastic about the project that he also persuaded his friend Robert Bork, the erstwhile conservative Supreme Court nominee, to join the faculty. Before long other prominent conservatives were lining up behind the project. They were so enamored with the idea, and the money Monaghan was willing to put behind it, that no one seemed to give much thought to the implications of a fast-food mogul wading into the world of higher ed.

Tom Monaghan was born in 1937 on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, Michigan. His father, a truck driver, died when he was just four years old, and his mother was unable to support him and his younger brother on the $27.50 a week she earned as a maid. The boys spent a couple years bouncing between foster homes before landing at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys, a Catholic orphanage in Jackson, Michigan. It was a harsh existence. When they weren’t saying their rosaries, the boys spent hours on end ironing and scrubbing floors. Punishment was doled out with a strap, often wielded by the feared Sister Ladislaus.

To escape, Monaghan turned to fantasy. He mused about becoming a priest or a shortstop for the Detroit Tigers, and imagined trading in his threadbare clothes for elegant belongings. “I would dream of having things—not the good or the better, but the best,” Monaghan writes in his memoir, Pizza Tiger. “And I could visualize them so perfectly, it was like actually possessing them. I would picture my house or cabin and sometimes I would even build it in my imagination.” These mental building projects later gave way to a fascination with architecture. Monaghan spent his teenage years plowing through books on Frank Lloyd Wright. He hoped to one day follow in the great architect’s footsteps, but this dream turned out to be beyond his reach. Monaghan graduated at the bottom of his high school class and enrolled in a seminary, but he was kicked out because he “lacked vocation.” A few years later, he moved to Ann Arbor with the hopes of studying architecture at the University of Michigan, but his finances were shaky and his math skills lacking. Though he enrolled three times, he never completed a single semester.

Then, in the winter of 1960, Monaghan and his brother heard that a man in Ypsilanti had a pizzeria he was looking to sell on the cheap. The pair managed to scrape together $75 for the down payment, and before long they were slinging pizzas. A few months later, Monaghan traded a Volkswagen Beetle for his brother’s share of the business. If he couldn’t be an architect, he decided, he would throw himself into building a pizza empire.

For all his struggles in the classroom, Monaghan turned out to be a brilliant businessman. Early on, he dropped sub sandwiches from his menu and began focusing on delivery to college campuses, which was far more lucrative than sit-down service. He also invented a new insulated pizza box. Unlike its chipboard predecessors, it could be stacked without squishing the pizzas inside. This allowed him to deliver more pies per trip, and assured they were warm when they arrived. Monaghan eventually began spreading his model to other college towns, and by the mid-1980s, nearly three new Domino’s franchises were opening every day.

The key to Domino’s growth was a tightly controlled franchise system. When a new store opened, headquarters would send a truck stocked with everything from pizza ovens to forks and aprons. Store managers worked from a thick operations manual, known as “the Bible,” which dictated every aspect of operations, down to the smallest detail. Monaghan also kept a tight rein on his employees: store workers were barred from sitting down during their shifts, and executives were expected to uproot their lives and move across the country on Monaghan’s whim. At headquarters, female staffers had to wear skirts or dresses that fell below the knees—pants were strictly forbidden.

As Monaghan’s business grew, so did his appetite for spending. He bought a Gulfstream jet, a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter, and a fleet of cars—among them the Packard that had ferried Franklin Roosevelt to his 1933 inauguration, and a handmade Bugatti Royale. (The latter cost him $8 million, the most ever paid for a classic car.) He also began buying up Frank Lloyd Wright homes, and assembled the world’s largest collection of Wright furniture. But his most famous purchase was the Detroit Tigers, which he bought in 1983. When the team won the World Series the following year, Monaghan had his private helicopter ferry hundreds of Domino’s pizzas to Tiger Stadium.

Even during his prodigal years, Monaghan never lost sight of his Catholic roots. And beginning in the mid-1980s, he started delving more deeply into his faith, and embracing conservative Catholic causes. Then, in 1989, at the suggestion of a Catholic scholar friend, he read a passage from the C. S. Lewis classic Mere Christianity that railed against pride as “the essential vice, the utmost evil.” It dawned on Monaghan that his hunger for success and flashy belongings was pride in its purest form. He immediately swore what he called a “millionaire’s vow of poverty” and began shedding his possessions. Finally, in 1998, he sold Domino’s for an estimated $1 billion and announced that he was retiring from the pizza business so he could devote his time and money to Catholic education. “I want to die broke,” he declared.

It was later that year that Safranek and the other professors approached Monaghan with their idea for the Catholic law school. Their timing couldn’t have been better; Monaghan was already busy piecing together his educational empire. His first act had been to found Ave Maria College, a Catholic school in Ypsilanti. But he had trouble getting accreditation for the stand-alone venture, so he struck a deal to take over St. Mary’s College, a 120-year-old Catholic school in nearby Orchard Lake Village. In exchange for its accreditation charter, he would give the struggling institution the cash it needed to thrive—among other things, Monaghan planned to beef up the faculty and build a division-one football team. (Or, as St. Mary’s then President Thaddeus Radzilowski recalls, “He wanted a school that produced three-hundred-pound tackles who were also theology majors.”)

Shortly after their seminal meeting with Monaghan, Safranek and the others negotiated buyouts from the University of Detroit Mercy, packed up their belongings, and moved to Ann Arbor. For most, this move came with some sacrifices. Safranek gave up tenure and a seat on the city council, and sold the home he had just bought for his wife and seven children, a brick abode with a vegetable garden near Lake Sinclair. But they were too wrapped up in their new venture to have regrets.

The professors set up shop in a bank of cubicles at Domino’s Farms, which housed, among other things, the headquarters of Domino’s Pizza. From there, they began putting together the curriculum and recruiting professors. Dobranski eventually drew up a list of thirty-six luminaries of Catholic legal education (he called them his “dream team”) and began contacting them with a personal invitation to join the faculty. Before long, inquiries from prospective students were pouring in. In the fall of 2000, when Ave Maria School of Law opened the doors to its new campus—an 85,000-square-foot Frank Lloyd Wright–style building in northeast Ann Arbor—it had seventy-five students, almost double the initial projections. Their bona fides, namely LSAT scores, were on par with students at many top-tier law schools. Suddenly, Monaghan—a college dropout who had made his fortune delivering pizzas to dorm rooms—was in the inner circle of what was shaping up to be an elite academic club.

From the beginning, Monaghan insisted he wouldn’t meddle in the law school’s daily operations. As he put it in an interview with the Chronicle of Higher Education, “When I owned the Detroit Tigers, I didn’t climb into the dugout and tell Sparky how to set his lineup.” But behind the scenes, he was quietly amassing control. Monaghan appointed himself chairman of the board. According to deposition testimony that Monaghan and his deputies later gave, Dean Dobranski was also given an employment contract with Monaghan’s private foundation rather than with Ave Maria law school. This meant the dean answered directly to Monaghan and not the board of governors, which was supposed to be in charge. Dobranski was also obligated to send the former pizza mogul daily writeups of his activities, to which Monaghan would reply with detailed instructions. What’s more, money for both the law school and the colleges was doled out in dribs and drabs, which allowed Monaghan to keep a tight rein on their operations. (St. Mary’s administrators, for instance, recall pleading with Monaghan’s foundation for $75 to pay the referees at a baseball game.) None of this really mattered as long as he and the faculty were driving toward the same vision. It was only when Monaghan hit on his next grand scheme that things began to unravel.

By early 2002, Monaghan had three promising schools—Ave Maria College, St. Mary’s, and Ave Maria School of Law—but they were scattered across Michigan. In the hopes of bringing them together on a single campus, he submitted plans to build a new Ave Maria University at Domino’s Farms. The proposal might have sailed through unnoticed if it weren’t for one detail: a 250-foot crucifix. That’s taller than the old General Motors building and almost as tall as the Statue of Liberty. The idea touched off a firestorm in Ann Arbor Township, a wealthy rural community with roughly 5,000 residents near the city of Ann Arbor. Many locals still nursed resentments over Monaghan’s previous architectural ventures; years earlier he had tried to build the “Leaning Tower of Pizza,” a thirty-five-story copper-and-bronze-clad tower with a slight eastward slant. A few also grumbled that the onetime pizza baron—who had already opened two convents, a pair of Catholic radio stations, and a Catholic newspaper in the area—was trying to turn the township into a theocracy.

In the end, the local planning commission denied his petition to build the university, and Monaghan was forced to look further afield. He eventually settled on a scraggly stretch of tomato fields bordering southwest Florida’s Corkscrew Swamp. The site was twenty miles inland of Naples, which has a high concentration of Catholics and conservatives, and Monaghan believed they would be friendlier to his vision. And, as luck would have it, Barron Collier Companies, a powerful local landowner, offered to donate some 750 acres on which to build the university. In return, Monaghan agreed to work with Barron Collier to build a planned community around the school, with the profit split down the middle.

What they envisioned was an old-fashioned company town with a theocratic twist. Monaghan and Barron Collier would own everything from the local utility company to the building supply that provided concrete for wells and foundations. But the most startling part of the whole arrangement was the plan for governing the community. In Florida, developers can petition to act as the local government for a number of years while a development is under construction. Monaghan and Barron Collier began pushing the Florida state legislature to pass a law that would allow them to control the local government in perpetuity—and, according to an investigation by the Naples Daily News, they eventually succeeded. While their powers were technically limited when it came to regulating behavior, they clearly intended to keep a tight grip on community life. The original letter of intent between Barron Collier and Monaghan said the town would “allow no public activities which are offensive to traditional Christian values or which might represent a scandal to Catholic and Christian sensibilities. Thus, no topless bars, abortion clinics, ‘adult’ bookstores or the like shall be permitted.”

Perhaps more importantly, the Florida project would allow Monaghan to indulge his passion for architecture. At the heart of town would sit an Italian-style piazza, flanked on one side by Monaghan’s giant crucifix and a 60,000-square-foot church inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. (Monaghan boasted at one point that he had sketched the original design for the church on a napkin.) The building was supposed to have the largest seating capacity of any Catholic church in America, though plans were later scaled back.

Monaghan went public with his plans in late 2002, saying in a press conference that he would donate $220 million for a new university in Florida, which he said would eventually have 5,000 students and a world-class golf course that would host the “Catholic Augusta National.” The following fall, the university opened an interim campus in an existing development near Naples.

As work got under way in Florida, financing for Monaghan’s Michigan projects began to evaporate. With only a few months’ notice, he severed ties with St. Mary’s and pulled most of the funding. The school would have been forced to shut down if another Catholic university hadn’t agreed to take it over at the last moment. Even so, it had to cut roughly half its faculty, and many students were forced to drop out because financial aid dried up. Despite promises from Monaghan to keep Ave Maria College open until 2007 so students could finish their degrees, administrators started moving to close it down, too. Professors say they were given a stark choice: move to Florida, or risk losing their jobs. Bewildered parents found themselves fighting back plans to pack up all the library books and ship them south. “It was like, ‘Whoa, wait a minute, you can’t just take all the books!’ ” recalls Therese Bower, whose son attended the school. Within two years, the student body had dwindled from 230 to around thirty, and Monaghan began offering the remaining students buyouts.

Even as the other campuses descended into turmoil, however, Ave Maria School of Law continued to flourish. The first class, which graduated in 2003, had a 93 percent bar passage rate, the highest of any school in the state. (This prompted the National Review to quip that the University of Michigan—known for churning out powerhouse litigators and Supreme Court justices—had the “second-best law school in Ann Arbor.”) The following year, a staggering 100 percent of Ave Maria law school grads passed the Michigan bar on the first go-round. Many were also going on to high-powered jobs and prestigious clerkships. “We were hitting success after success,” says Joe Falvey, who was then associate dean. “Everything was clicking on all cylinders.”

Why was the law school spared? The answer appears to hang on a technicality. Monaghan initially wanted to uproot it and move it to Florida, along with Ave Maria College. But in mid-2003, the board commissioned a feasibility study, which found the move could put the school’s pending ABA accreditation at risk. Shortly after that, the board announced that it had tabled the idea of relocating. But behind closed doors, planning for the move continued. According to Falvey, who regularly attended board meetings, plans were drawn up for a $30 million law school building on the Florida campus—it would sit just across from “Mansion Row,” a grassy promenade lined with stately homes belonging to university officials.

At one point early on, Monaghan invited the law school board to Naples for a stay at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort, a four-star hotel with a tiki bar overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. While there, the group met with Barron Collier executives, who laid out their plans, including those for the new law school building. By this time Charlie Rice, a founding board member and professor emeritus at Notre Dame, was beginning to have grave doubts about the project. “I thought, This is going to be a train wreck,” he recalls. “We’re going to uproot this thriving law school and move it to the campus of some nonexistent university before we even know if the whole thing is viable?” According to attendees, and a string of memos, Rice suggested that the board agree to consult faculty and students before committing to a move, and give them at least four years’ notice. He also pressed for a secure endowment, so the school wouldn’t be dependent on one person. Monaghan came unglued. (He later sent Rice a letter saying, “I am writing to express my embarrassment over my inability to control my emotions.”) After that, the struggle between the two men only grew more bitter. According to Falvey and Rice, Monaghan eventually began threatening to pull funding for the school if the board refused to move it to Florida. Rice, meanwhile, grew increasingly shrill in his resistance. At one point he wrote Monaghan saying, “If you succeed in your effort to compel the Board to vote to relocate, you will find that you have relocated merely a name and an empty shell.” (Monaghan did not respond to requests for an interview.)

Gradually, details of the conflict and the looming move leaked out, and it had a toxic effect on the school. By 2005, the quality of applicants was dropping, and the most promising students were transferring out by the dozen. To keep the student body from collapsing, administrators had to give out ever-larger scholarships. This had the perverse effect of making the school, which was supposed to be financially independent by 2010, even more dependent on Monaghan. Despite the turmoil, in August 2005 the ABA granted Ave Maria law school final accreditation, meaning it could begin openly pursuing the move to Florida. The following month, the board voted to impose term limits, a move many students and faculty saw as a ploy to push Rice out.

Rice’s ouster, combined with a poor showing in the U.S. News & World Report rankings several months later, heightened the sense among faculty and students that Monaghan and the administration would stop at nothing to push through the move to Florida, even if it meant destroying the school. What started as rumbling discontent burgeoned into full-scale revolt. In mid-2006, the faculty held a vote of no confidence in the dean, and roughly two-thirds voted in favor. Alumni and students followed suit, with their own no-confidence vote and, later, a call for Monaghan’s removal as chairman of the board. But the uproar made little difference. The following February, the board voted overwhelmingly to move the law school to Florida.

Meanwhile, the administration began cracking down on agitators. “Monaghan wanted no dissent, so the screws began to get turned,” says Safranek. No one was targeted more aggressively than the former University of Detroit Mercy professor. Safranek, who was among the most outspoken in his criticism of the school’s management, was repeatedly disciplined, often for seemingly trumped-up offenses. At one point, he received a letter saying he had been found guilty of “uninvited” touching of “the person of one of the Law School staff employees,” an accusation that smacked of sexual impropriety. What actually happened only became clear much later, when the contents of Safranek’s employee file—including a written statement from the alleged victim—were released as the result of a lawsuit: Safranek had walked by the dean’s secretary while she was shuffling through the trunk of her car in the law school parking lot, tapped her on the arm, and said, “Good morning, Sarah.”

Based on these and other allegations, Safranek had his tenure revoked in July 2007. Since that time, he’s been hunting, without success, for another faculty position. By now he’s lost hope of ever working in academia again. “I try not to have regrets,” he says. “But for twenty years, teaching was my life. Sometimes I have the feeling that everything I’ve done has been for naught.” (Administrators declined to comment on the circumstances surrounding Safranek’s departure because he has a suit pending against the school. “Our policy is not to comment on matters before the court,” Dean Eugene Milhizer wrote in an e-mail.)

Since Safranek’s ouster, the law school has been in a freefall. Most of the original faculty have fled or been pushed out, and the quality of the students has tumbled. One current professor told me, “Our student body now is one of the four or five worst in America.” The instability has also wreaked havoc on the school’s reputation: in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report law school rankings, Ave Maria tied for last place in the peer-assessment category, the most important measure in determining a school’s standing. (The school was not officially ranked because U.S. News doesn’t rank schools that land in the bottom tier.) Meanwhile, there are signs that Monaghan’s foundation, which funds the law school and the university, is on the verge of running out of money, in part because Monaghan bet his fortune—and the future of his nonprofits—on the now-crumbling Florida real estate market. Earlier this year, Ave Maria University’s second-longest-standing professor resigned, but not before sending a letter to administrators expressing his alarm at the school’s financial straits. “I fear that all of us (to different degrees) are participating in something that we may later deeply regret,” he wrote, “namely selling to young people and their families [an] educational product that we do not have sufficient reason to believe can be delivered.”

Meanwhile, in June, the U.S. Department of Education reported that Ave Maria School of Law had failed its financial responsibility test, the only law school in the nation to do so. Even more troubling, the school ranked sixth to last among all American institutions of higher learning on the department’s financial responsibility index, thanks partly to its multimillion-dollar deficit. With its finances in disarray, the school has shelved plans for the $30 million building across from Mansion Row. When Ave Maria School of Law finally opened for business in Florida this August, it was in a former retirement home on the outskirts of Naples.

Many who have lived through the turmoil at the law school and Monaghan’s other educational institutions believe that the root problem is his inability to grasp the difference between running a fast-food business and an institution of higher learning. “He views these schools as franchises that he can open and close at will like a pizza shop,” says Thomas Woods, a former dean of St. Mary’s. “He has this Cartesian view of the world—that you can dream up an idea in your head and impose it on the plastic substance of reality, like a cookie cutter on dough. But academic life is messier than that. Things have to be done by negotiation and persuasion. They have to be worked out over time.” Unfortunately for the professors and students who wagered their futures on his educational ventures, that kind of give and take simply isn’t Monaghan’s style.

Adversarial to the hilt and exaggerating the importance of the Lisbon Treaty beyond belief, Sally McNamara of the Heritage Foundation sees a slightly improved European Union as a danger for US hegemony in the world instead of as a better ally.

Her recipe to save Europe “from itself” is the most disingenuous piece of advice I have seen in a long time.

One can only gape with amazement at the contorted reasoning on the Heritage Foundation’s blog The Foundry, where McNamara calls on William Hague and the UK Conservative Party to undermine Europe in order to “save” it: A Lisbon Treaty Retrospective? (Posted May 13th, 2009 at 11.41am)

European helpers

First, we have to realise that there are some in the USA prepared to support and finance such crap. But their paranoid world view needs European helpers, even if the various unanimity rules make the European Union an easy prey.

Enter the UK Conservative Party. William Hague has promised a referendum on the ratified Treaty of Lisbon, if it has not entered into force when the Tories form the government. With or without a referendum, Hague has promised a renegotiation of Britain’s membership in the European Union. In less than a month, after the European elections, the Tories are going to establish an anti-integrationist political group in the European Parliament, with more or less savoury elements of the nationalist right.

After recruiting bunches of ultra-nationalists and assorted extremists, Libertas.eu is pouring almost unlimited resources into an election campaign built on a rejection of the Lisbon Treaty. What Declan Ganley calls taking the European Union back for the people, would in practice mean taking the EU back to the Treaty of Nice.

Minister calls for clarity on Ganley's backers

Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has called on Declan Ganley to confirm that a London-based hedge fund said to be backing his campaign does not have a vested interest in a No vote.

Speaking at a news conference this morning, Mr Lenihan said he found it curious that a hedge fund backer would have a direct interest in goings-on in Ireland.

He said it was clear that a No vote would break confidence in Ireland.

It was, he claimed, 'disturbing' that Mr Ganley's only declared backer would be an organisation that did not have Ireland's best interests at heart.

Mr Lenihan also said that Dr Michael Somers, the head of the National Treasury Management Agency, had confirmed that a No vote would increase the cost of Ireland's borrowing.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Mr Ganley described the comments as nonsense and said he had not received support from such a hedge fund in this referendum.

DECLAN Ganley's 'No to Lisbon Campaign' has been bankrolled by a secretive British hedge fund boss that made hundreds of millions of euros "short selling" Irish banks last year.

Regulatory filings reveal that the wealthy investor, Crispin Odey, donated almost €3,500 to "Pro-Democracy: Libertas.eu" on May 28. The Mayfair-based hedge fund boss also donated nearly €15,000 worth of services to the organisation. Libertas is also backed by other London financiers.

Odey, who received a near €35m bonus last year, was one of the leading short sellers of Anglo Irish Bank, before the bank imploded.

Legatus is a grouping of super-rich Christian Fundamentalists with a primary aim of attacking one of the main foundation stones upon which modern democracy is built - the separation of chuch and state.
Like many Islamic fundamentalist groups - Legatus see this separation as morally wrong as they strive to impose a Christian form of Sharia law.
This extreme religious view goes hand in hand with a form of brutish laissez-faire capitalism that even targets movements such as "Fair Trade" as a form of moral cancer and recently in the US Obama's attempts to reform health care system.
In their own Papist Taliban style, they rail against any moves towards a fairer, more just society.
Legatus was founded by Domino Pizza Billionaire Tom Monaghan in response to what he saw was the sell-out of the mainstream Catholic hierarchy.
“Mr. Monaghan founded Legatus a year after the American bishops of the church issued a letter critiquing Reagan-era capitalism and calling for fair wages, stronger unions, a guarantee of full employment and other economic policies that took the powerless into account." the New York Times said.
Leading Catholic conservatives were not impressed. To them this represented a triumph of liberal secularism and socialism.
The same "socialist" critiques are being thrown at Obama for attempting to tweak the healthcare system to make it marginally more just.

In the US, Legatus look to promote the more extreme members of the Republican party (GOP) in its efforts to change the face of American politics. One source said of its founder:

“This guy seems really, predictably, interested in changing the ideology of the Republican Party and ultimately the ideology of Congress,” said Clyde Wilcox, an expert in campaign finance and political science professor at Georgetown University in Washington.

Legatus have found a now movement to promote in Ireland.
Declan Ganley, and his Libertas brand have for the past year at least received succour and support from this small group of super rich Ultra Catholic, anti abortion, anti contraception and ultra conservatives who are active in politics in at least four countries.

The four countries in which they have active branches are Ireland, Canada, Poland and the USA. Libertas unsuccessfully ran its greatest number of candidates in Poland, many linked to the ultra Catholic, far right League of Polish Families, in Junes European elections.
Ganley has hit paydirt by connecting with this very right-wing conservative (economically and socially) Catholic /neo Catholic unelected elite.

The senior Libertas source alleges that Kellegher sat in on a Libertas policy meeting in the Brussels office on 3 December 2008 which is owned by his company Shelbourne Devlopment Projects. Libertas spokesperson John McGuirk refused to confirm or deny whether Declan Ganley himself was a member of Legatus or whether he merely received support from them.

THE UNELECTED ROYAL ELITES BEHIND DECLAN GANLEY'S LIBERTAS

One of the cornerstones of Libertas’s campaign has been their attacks on nameless, faceless “unelected elites”.
Yet it seems that that a number Declan Ganley’s significant followers and backers are drawn from the ranks of Christian fundamentalist monarchists who despise the whole European project because it threatens the very basis of the elitist feudalist world they would still have us all live in.

Undemocracic , unlelected and definitively “unelectable elites”
“Unelected elites” is such an apt title for those of Ganley’s backers who would happily turn back the clock on the Enlightenment, the American and, certainly, the French Revolution.
One former member of the elitist far right monarchist party the Movement Pour le France, Arnaud Herve from Breast, gave a great insight into the mindset prevalent Viscount Phillipe de Villiers' party – the party that became Libertas France.
It was run along feudal lines with local aristocrats taking control over grass roots levels and boasting about their preordained right to lead the people.
“Those from aristocratic families were immediately appointed as the heads of the local groups, they had direct access to de Villiers himself, and they were selected as candidates.” Herve said in an online posting. (Ref below)
“It looked like a return of the Ancien Régime. It was such a caricature it almost looked stupid. I even drove once with a local count who was telling me that the nobles were chosen by the population during the Middle-Ages, because they were more dynamic, more intelligent, and they could lead the communities for the common good”

Another Libertas European ally with similar anti-democtartic elitist views was Janusz Korwin-Mikke of the Unia Polityki Realnej (Antydemokratyzm, Antysocjalizm, Eurosceptycyzm an n advocate of monarchy and a member of Klub Zachowawczo-Monarchistyczny (Conservative-Monarchist Club). GANLEY’S ROYAL UNELECTED BACKERS

While Ganley claims to be Pro-EU and anti Lisbon, these backers have been consistently against the whole European Proejct. It seems they deem the project symptomatic of the 'little people' getting 'uppity' and threatening the last hopes of an unelected elite that still clings to the ideas of sacral kingship and the "divine rights .”
The descendents of the Bourbon and Charlemgne – how unelected can one get?
In recent days Declan Ganley told contacts of blogger Peoplekorps that COIR, the fundamentalist Catholic group were undermining the Libertas campaign against Europe. This may have given the impression that Ganley was upset that his “secular” political party was being usurped and undermined by fundamentalist Christians. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Libertas are in fact backed and supported not just by fundamentalist Christians but even more startling they are supported by the members of the most undisputed unelected elites of Europe, the aristocratic descendents and heirs to the Bourbon Royal houses of Europe and also Charlemagne.
Peoplekorps can reveal that one the strongest ultra Catholic monarchist connections that Libertas have comes through an Irish family, the Ascoughs, that is extremely active in fundamentalist Christianity in Europe. This family was introduced to Declan Ganley by Caroline Simons thereby providing links to a pan-European monarchist, aristocratic, ultra Catholic cabal.
Damian Erbgraf v.Schönborn-Buchheim and his Irish wife Deirdre Mary Ascough have both campaigned actively for Libertas in 2008.
Damian Erbgraf von.Schönborn-Buchheim is descended from Charlemange on his father’s side and the French monarchy on his mothers’. He was born in Vienna, Austria on 17 July 1965 the son of Friedrich Karl Graf v.Schönborn-Buchheim and of his wife, Princess Isabelle d'Orléans).

Isabelle d’Orleans is a Boubon, and holds the title Princess de France. As eldest son, Damien, could in theory claim the French throne should it still exist. Their backgrounds place this couple at the centre of fundamentalist Catholic monarchist ambitions in Europe.
Viscount Phillipe de Villiers of the Vendee, the centre of the counter revolution in France, was the only MEP elected on the Libertas ticket was. De Villier is a far right French fundamentalist Catholic who believes in monarchical rule. He too is a descendent of the House D’Orlean. An Ancestor was Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (born 2 August 1674(1674-08-02) Château de Saint-Cloud, Saint-Cloud, France Died 2 December 1723)
Deirdre Ascough’s sister in law Jacki is a writer for the far right fundamentalist Catholic ALIVE! newspaper. Jacki’s husband Tom Ascough is a director of the Iona Institute, a fundamentalist Catholic organisation. http://www.ionainstitute.ie/board_of_directors.php . Both were in attendance along with Phillipe de Villier at Ganley’s Shelbourne dinner in 2008. Brother Sean Ascough, like Tom, is a self-employed Chartered Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, and has almost twenty years experience of youth evangelisation and other religious initiatives.
Jacki is also a leading practitioner of Christian fertility initiatives. Jacki Ascough is a well known media commentator writing regularly in the ALIVE! newspaper. She is also a fertility care practioner. Her husband, Tom, is a mechanical engineer and sits on the board of The Iona Institute which is dedicated to arguing the case for marriage in civic society.
Libertas is a political front for the amibitions of an ultra catholic aristocratic cabal. But as to the actual the role and the aims of this unlected elite, Mr Ganley seems to espouse values directly opposed to the ‘transparency and accountability” he cries for.
But that should not comes as a major surprise given that the man has been described as a “ liar, self-mytholgiser and snake oil salesman.”

A RADICAL right-wing activist who famously branded pro-divorce campaigners "wife- swapping sodomites" in the 1990s is involved in the Coir campaign for a 'No' vote on the Lisbon Treaty.

Una Bean Mhic Mhathuna's track record of high-profile campaigning for traditional Catholic values stretches back decades.

The mother of four last night confirmed she was involved in Coir's 'No' campaign.

The revelations are further evidence of the strong ties between Coir and Youth Defence as Bean Mhic Mhathuna's daughters, Niamh and Una, are reportedly founding members of the radical anti-abortion group.

Former Youth Defence chairman Eoghan de Faoite denied he was also part of the campaign, despite claims by canvassers that he was "running the show".

Last week, Bean Mhic Mhathuna accused the media of campaigning for a 'Yes' vote.

"You should be ashamed of yourselves; you're just on the side of big business," Bean Mhic Mhathuna said.

They're clearly anti-Lisbon, but Cóir's aims appear to be those of a religious movement, writes Political Correspondent Conor McMorrow

'If Youth Defence are the Cubs, then Cóir are definitely the Scouts". That is how one observer views the relationship between anti-Lisbon treaty group Cóir and the extreme anti-abortion group Youth Defence.

Cóir stirred up much debate last week when it launched a controversial anti-Lisbon poster campaign. But who or what is Cóir? Where did it come from and what are its members' motives?

The group describes itself as a voluntary, non-profit campaign group which was founded after the rejection of the Nice treaty in 2001 was reversed in a second referendum.

"We came together in 2003 specifically to defend Ireland's sovereignty, which we believe is under attack from Europe," said spokesman Richard Greene last year.

Cóir literature on Lisbon distributed in July claimed the Irish people "are being bullied into accepting a Godless Empire" and called on people to say the "Holy Rosary daily until 2 October".

A source close to the group, who did not wish to be named, told the Sunday Tribune that Cóir is the culmination of a group of people "who have had many incarnations. They are about 10 organisations rolled into one."

He said, "It all goes back to the MacMathuna family, the matriarch of that family being Una Bean MacMathuna who famously described politicians who are in favour of divorce as 'wife swapping sodomites'. Although she is not formally involved she has a lot of influence over Youth Defence, which share some of the same personnel and a premises with Cóir."

The source refers to Cóir and its various incarnations as 'Continuity Ireland' as they are "ultra nationalist" and they would "find themselves at home politically with the politics of Ruairi Ó Brádaigh and the more pious elements of Republican Sinn Féin."

It is understood that some of the people involved in Cóir ran a newspaper called The Irish Family Press which ceased publication in the last two years.

The final issue of that newspaper claimed that the paper would be available online in future but it has yet to appear.

The source added: "Their basic ideal is based on a Gaelic, Catholic and free Ireland. To be Irish and not Catholic would be anathema to their beliefs. That is why they would have had a greater welcome for Polish immigrants, who were Catholic, than immigrants from areas such as Asia."

The same group of people was involved in the No to Nice campaign in 2002 where people like Justin Barrett were heavily involved. Barrett is believed to be still involved with Cóir but he does not have any public involvement.

An observer said: "They are Libertarian in their politics and would not believe in state involvement of any aspect of family life."

A women called Mena Bean Uí Chribin is believed to be involved on the fringes of the organisation. The name of this post mistress cropped up during the infamous Roscommon incest case earlier this year when it emerged that she lobbied social workers asking that the children in the case be left with their mother.

Many of the devoutly Catholic members of Cóir are ardent followers of the Latin mass and prominent Cóir member Scott Schittl is believed to have completed three years of training to become a Latin priest in America at one point.

A source close to the organisation claimed that a number of people involved in Cóir are also involved in a project called TruthTV which goes into schools and promotes pro-life advocacy. Some members were also involved in a campaign against embryo research in UCC and the pro-life Mother and Child campaign.

One observer noted: "The same group of people are involved in campaigning for all these issues and they operate out of the same building on Capel Street in Dublin."

Even though the group advocates hard-line Catholic issues there is understood to be some bad blood between mainstream Catholicism and Cóir members. The Catholic bishops have supported Lisbon while Cóir vehemently opposes it.

A source close to Cóir added: "Youth Defence themselves derive money from evangelical circles in America. They are good at preaching in these circles about Ireland being one of the last bastions of Catholicism left on earth and they get young US volunteers to come over on the back of that."

One politician noted: "Some members of Cóir grew out of the militant nationalist wing of the old IRA and they have a vision that Ireland is better off going it alone without foreign interference."

They have a number of articulate spokespeople such as Richard Greene, a former Fianna Fáil member and later a Green party councillor. One source pointed out that Greene is not associated with Youth Defence and he "may not be into same brand of traditional Catholicism as the MacMathunas".

A politician, who does not support Cóir, remarked: "The Yes side will be just as good at oversimplifying their arguments as Cóir have been on their posters. The success of Cóir so far has been that they have learned the lesson of liberal activists on the other side as they have tended to keep their arguments simple.

"They go for big impact and a simple message and they are not too concerned about the truth.

"They seem to have people on the ground and Youth Defence seems to be attracting quite a degree of student support."

Those charming people from the United Kingdom Independence Party -UKIP- are actually on record calling for the slashing of the UK's minimum wage.

Apart from being an unsavoury crew who we'd prefer to tell to eh...run along, the UKIP are in a strange place politically.

They only exist as a party in the very Europe they want to dismantle. (They have no representation in the UK).

In fact they are the political equivalent of the sultry teenager who takes the pocket money from his Da but when asked to clean the car, snarls mumbles the likes of "You've no right to ask me to do.....".

In fact the UKIP's relationship with Europe makes Sinn Fein's seem quite healthy, really.

Godders' new Britain - Let's abolish the minimum wage and bring back wage slavery

The ever delightful and publicity shy Godfrey Bloom took to the airwaves of the Jeremy Vine show over the festive period to proclaim that the national minimum wage should be abolished, adding in true faux-magisterial style that "If I want to employ somebody at £4 an hour that's my business". Fantastic, Godfrey, let's get that Union Jack out and bring back wage slavery!

However, UKIPwatch wonders whether Godfrey did his sums before making this claim. Maybe someone could point out to Godders' that if someone worked a 45 hour week at £4 an hour their annual wage would work out at a fraction under £9.5k before tax (roughly £8,500 after tax). Even Godfrey, as a self-proclaimed expert on all things finance related, should be able to recognise that there is no way anyone can be expected to live on this.

It's also quite a contradiction for Godders, the renowned bon viveur, to suddenly turn into Mr Scrooge. One law for him and one for everyone else, I guess.
